LONGVIEW -- The University of Texas at Tyler men’s golf team trumped the field at the LeTourneau Spring Classic, beating eight other ASC teams to claim the championship. Dean Rodgers (SR/Lake Jackson, TX) won the tournament. The Patriots women finished seventh.
The Patriots led from the first round, shooting a 295-296-306-897 to win the event by nine strokes over national power McMurry (906). UT Tyler also beat conference teams Hardin Simmons (908), Texas Lutheran (909), LeTourneau (918), Mississippi College (950), Louisiana College (975), UT Dallas (976), Concordia (1047), and Schreiner (DNF).
Rodgers won his second tournament of the year. Drew Johnson (SR/Corsicana, TX) tied for fourth with a 74-71-79-224. Coy Beck (FR/Canyon Lake, TX) finished twelfth with a 74-75-79-228, one stroke ahead of Brandon Ellis (FR/Village Mills, TX) with a 77-77-75-229. Will Orr (JR/El Campo, TX) finished twenty-third with a 79-75-79-233.
The Patriots women’s team finished in seventh place with a 388-378-766, ahead of conference rivals LeTourneau (438-387-825) and UT Dallas (436-443-879). Cynthia Sciba (JR/Friendswood, TX) was the Patriots top finisher, winding up in a tie for fourteenth place with a 90-86-176. Amber Grounds (FR/Whitesboro, TX) finished in a tie for twenty-sixth with a 96-89-185.
This concludes the season for both teams.
