PORT ST. LUCIE,
Fla. – The University of Texas at Tyler men’s and women’s golf teams
finished the final day of the 2009 Division III National Championships
at fourth and nineteenth places, respectively.
The
Patriots were just one of four programs to have both their men’s and
women’s teams compete at this year’s championships.
The
men finished their final day of play by shooting 298, to finish the
tournament with an 1184. UT Tyler finished the four-day event 20
strokes behind tournament winners Oglethorpe.
Senior
Brian Jennings (Bullard, Texas), junior Spencer Ellis (Tyler, Texas)
and junior Brandon Ellis (Village Mills, Texas) all shot a 74 on the day
to finish two-over-par.
Jennings
finished the tournament in a tie for sixth place with a four-day total
of 292 for four-under-par.
In the
women’s tournament, the Patriots had finished each of the three
previous days at 18th place, but on Saturday they fell to 19th place
after shooting a 345 for the second consecutive day.
Sophomore
Katie Harris (Salado, Texas) once again led UT Tyler on the day by
shooting an 82. Harris finished the tournament in a tie for 36th place.
The
end of the National Championship tournament provides a capstone for what
has been an amazing season for both UT Tyler teams.
The
men won a school record five tournaments, finished second at the
American Southwest Conference tournament, were ranked in the Top 10
nationally for the majority of the season and secured one of two
at-large berths to the national tournament.
The
women also had an outstanding year by winning the first tournament in
program history and winning the ASC Championship in consecutive
tournaments.
