CHAMPS: @UTTylerMensGolf wins Al and Nancy Jones Memorial

TYLER – UT Tyler freshman Hayden Montoya won the first collegiate tournament of his career and the Patriots “B Team” earned the Al and Nancy Jones Memorial championship title on Tuesday at Hollytree Country Club.

Montoya, a Longview native, shot a 1-under-par 75-72-68 – 215 to win UT Tyler’s home tournament while Nicklaus Cuny finished fourth overall with a 73-82-78 – 233 at the two-day, three-round tournament. Harris Butler, who finished the tournament with two eagles, was playing as an individual and finished third overall for the Patriots with a 72-76-72 – 220, while Jeff Murphy was fifth with a 78-72-75 – 225 for fifth, also as an individual. UT Tyler won the tournament with a 305-304-297 – 906, while Cal Lutheran was second with a 309-309-300 – 918 for second and Schreiner (920) was third. The UT Tyler “A Team” won the Tournament Town Preview on Monday to start a two-win week for the program.

Montoya, who finished the tournament with 10 birdies and 36 pars, closed out the tournament by shooting 4-under with four birdies and 14 pars in the final round at Hollytree. Austin Olsen was 17th with a 73-82-78 – 233, while Brandon Schafer (238) and Payton Capps (240) rounded out the team representatives for the Patriots.

Montoya won the tournament by three strokes over Tyler Junior College’s Ethan Bozner who had the tournament low round of 67 on Tuesday for the runner-up finish. UT Tyler finished the tournament leading scoring averages on par 3, 4 and 5s during the 54-hole event.
