RECAP: @UTTylerMensGolf in 3rd after opening round in Mississippi

TUNICA, Miss. – The No. 1-ranked UT Tyler men’s golf team is in third place after the first 36 holes of the Rhodes College Fall Classic which started on Sunday and will conclude on Monday at Tunica National. UT Tyler shot a team total of 292-287 – 579 (3-over) in its opening rounds, while Emory leads the field with a 283-285 – 568 (8-under) and Southwestern is second with a 292-287 – 579.

DJ Godoy led the Patriots by shooting a 75-69 – 144 in his first two rounds, while George Toone carded a 72-74 – 146 in the opening tournament of his senior season. Sam Hill and Trystan Perkins both ended with a first-day total of 147 with Hill shooting 71-76 and Perkins a 74-73 on Sunday. Tyler Uhlig, in his first tournament as a Patriot, shot 77-71 – 148 with six birdies on the day.

Godoy, a senior from Lindale, started the tournament with a 3-over round with three birdies but also had four bogeys and one double. In his next round through, Godoy had four birdies and eagled the par-5 14th hole. His back-9 on his second round was at 5-under and propelled him up the leaderboard. Toone, who earned All-American honors last year, made five birdies in his second round after three in his first. He started the season with by shooting even-par in his first round. Hill also began his senior season on Sunday by shooting 1-under in his first round and 4-over in the next 18. His first-round scorecard had two birdies, one bogey and 15 pars on it.

The Patriots will play 18 more holes on Monday to complete their first fall tournament of the season. UT Tyler will host the Al and Nancy Jones Memorial next week at Hollytree Country Club while the team travels to Greensboro, North Carolina to compete in the Tournament Town Fall Preview.
