RECAP: Hill tied for lead; Toone 3rd entering final round

Thursday, May 18, 2017

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – UT Tyler junior Sam Hill is tied for the lead going into the final round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship after shooting a 2-under-par 70 on Thursday at the El Campeon Course to lead the Patriots who are tied for fourth in the team standings with 18 holes to play at the Mission Inn Resort & Club.

UT Tyler shot a 290 on Thursday to match the low team round this week at the tournament and has a 296-305-290 – 891. The Patriots are only four shots behind Wittenberg University going into Friday. The final round of the championship will be played at El Campeon and is set to begin at around 8 a.m. (CST) for the Patriots.

“We probably had the best round as a team all year,” UT Tyler head coach Michael McMunn said. “We made some putt and were for the most part able to leave missed shots in easier areas today. But we have some mistakes that we can control and learn from. I’m excited that we are in a nice position now.”

Hill made three birdies, 14 pars and only one bogey and leads the tournament with a 74-73-70 – 217 which is tied with Brad Lankler who is at 217 with a 71-74-72 score card as an individual for Franklin & Marshall. Hill and Lankler are 1-over-par for the tournament, while George Toone is tied for third at 2-over with a 75-72-71 – 218 entering Friday’s final round. Toone was 1-under on Thursday with two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 14th hole.

UT Tyler senior Brandon Rougeau shot 1-over on Thursday and is 29th overall with a 74-78-73 – 225 three-round total, while freshman Trystan Perkins is 53rd with a 73-82-76 – 231 and Cody Gilbert is at 78-83-78 – 239 for the Patriots.

Wittenberg is four shots ahead of UT Tyler and leads the tournament with an 298-290-299 – 887 total, while Guiford College is second with a 300-293-296 – 889. Huntingdon College (890) led through two rounds but is now third, while Greensboro is tied with the Patriots entering Friday’s round.
