KERRVILLE – UT Tyler junior George Toone shot 7-under-par to finish second overall and the Patriots finished as the American Southwest Conference Men’s Golf Championship runner-up for the fifth straight year with Mary Hardin-Baylor 20 shots ahead after the completion of the 54-hole tournament at Comanche Trace.
UT Tyler shot a 292-279-293 – 864 to finish as the runner-up, while the Cru carded a 276-283-285 – 844 to win the ASC Championship.
Toone led the Patriots by shooting 74-67-68 – 209 with five birdies in his final round of the championship. Sam Hill finished sixth at the tournament with a 69-74-74 –217 (1-over) and Brandon Rougeau was ninth overall with a 75-69-74 – 218 for the third UT Tyler top-10 finish. Cody Gilbert finished the tournament with a scorecard reading 74-71-79 – 224 and Trystan Perkins was 16th as a freshman with a 76-72-77 – 225 for the Patriots. Hill was 2-over in his final round with two birdies, while Rougeau made four birdies in his last 18.
UMHB’s Mats Hein won the tournament and set a 54-hole ASC record by shooting 15-under-par with a 64-69-68 – 201 scorecard. Hein made 16 birdies and an eagle to win the tournament. Concordia finished third overall with a 292-296-287 – 875 as the defending champions. Hardin-Simmons was fourth (916) and UT Dallas fifth (917) in the eight-team tournament.
UMHB earned the ASC automatic qualifier, while the Patriots will have to wait until May 8 for the NCAA at-large selections to the national tournament which will be played from May 16-19 at Mission Inn in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.
