RICHARDSON, Texas -- Five student-athletes from UT Tyler were honored by the American Southwest
Conference as Players of the Week in their respective sports for the week ending March 25, the league
office announced.
On the softball diamond, junior first baseman Heather
Abshire (Lafayette, LA / LHS) went 8-for-12 with a double and
seven RBIs to fuel a 3-1 week. Abshire also scored two runs, walked once, stole
a base and never struck out. She also excelled in the circle, going 2-0 with
eight strikeouts and did not allow an earned run over 12 2/3 innings of work.
Meanwhile, on the baseball mound, senior right-handed pitcher Parker
Sheets (Irving, TX / MacArthur HS) tossed 10 scoreless inning
with seven strikeouts and no walks over two appearances. Sheets earned the win
over Schreiner by going eight innings, scattering seven hits. He added two
innings of relief in a 4-2 mid-week win over Austin College.
In men's golf, Matt Stephens (Mt.
Belvieu, TX / Lamar) carded a 3-under 67-74—141 to win the individual
title at the Hal Sutton Intercollegiate at The Golf Club at StoneBridge in
Bossier City, La. Stephens, who takes the league’s weekly top golfer award for
the second straight time, also helped the Patriots capture the team crown by
seven strokes. His opening-round was a tournament low and one of just two under
70 in the field of 57 golfers.
For men's tennis, UT Tyler freshman Rob Hodous (Fayetteville,
AR / FHS) went 3-0 at No. 6 singles against Linfield, Hardin-Simmons and
nationally-ranked Trinity. Against Trinity, he battled back for a 4-6, 6-4,
10-7 win. He also teamed with Kevin Wright for a pair of No. 2 doubles
victories.
Finally, in women's tennis, Brittany Trich (Longview,
TX / LeTourneau) went 3-0 at No. 5 singles against regionally-ranked
Whitman, Hardin-Simmons and nationally-ranked Trinity. Her 6-4, 7-6 (7-0)
victory against Trinity gave the Patriots a 5-4 team win. It was also the
highest-ranked team UT Tyler has topped in program history.
