SANDESTIN, Fla. -- The UT Tyler men’s golf team rallied in the final round of
the prestigious Golfweek Fall Invitational at the Raven Golf Course to finish
in second place with a three-round team total of 883 (291-304-288).
The Patriots, currently No. 1 in the GolfStat head-to-head NCAA
national standings, were playing without the leadership of head coach King
Campbell who checked himself into Sacred Heart Hospital in Destin on Monday after experiencing difficulty breathing. Campbell is expected to make a
full recovery.
UT Tyler was again led by junior John Dukes who shot an even-par
71 in the final round to finish with a 218 for the tournament. He opened the
event with a 1-under 70 and shot a 77 in the second round.
The final round’s most impressive finish came from UT Tyler
freshman Cody Gonzalez who fired an opening-round 76 and struggled to an 84 in
the second round, but made the tournament’s biggest improvement with a 1-under
70 in the final round – shaving 14 strokes off his second round.
Trent Boudoin shot three consistent rounds of 73 to finish
with a 219 and a tie for seventh place overall.
Jacob Walsh had rounds of 76, 74 and 75 to place 22nd
and Joey Rippel came in 25th with a combined 226 (72-80-74).
The Patriots made a run at top finisher Guilford, which shot
a team total of 874 for the tournament, but medalist Noah Ratner’s 204
(66-69-69) paced the Quakers to the team title.
UT Tyler assistant coach Ky Evans told Golfweek that
thinking of Campbell in the hospital had an impact on the Patriots.
“Our kids did really well, though that was a big
distraction,” Evans said. “He (Campbell) seems to be doing better today – he
was texting me earlier, which means he must have gotten his phone back
somehow.”
The Patriots return home to play in the UT Tyler Alumni
Tournament on Oct. 16.
