Sunday, October 1, 2017

DELAWARE, Ohio – UT Tyler senior George Toone shot a program-record 64 (7-under-par) at The Gordin Classic in his opening round on Sunday and is tied for the lead after 36 holes at 1-under-par for the No. 1-ranked Patriots who are atop the team standings at the Delaware Golf Club.

UT Tyler shot a 289-290 – 579 (11-over) on the first day of the 54-hole tournament that will resume at 8:30 a.m. on Monday with Methodist University in second at 290-292 – 582 (14-over) and Greensboro third at 23-over.

A returning all-American from England, Toone recorded his 64 during an eight-birdie round where he had only one bogey. He was 5-under on the front nine in the historic round where he also matched Chapman Herwood’s programs Low Round vs. Par record. Herwood shot 7-under at the 2015 American Southwest Conference Championship. Toone’s 64 is the lowest in program history, breaking the previous record of 65 which was carded by Buddy Hallman (2016), Herwood (2015), Joey Rippel (2010) and Drew Johnson (2006).

Toone finished the first day in Ohio with a 64-77 – 141 (1-under) and is tied atop the leaderboard with Jared Chinn who shot 70-71 – 141 for Methodist.

UT Tyler senior Sam Hill will go into Monday’s final round tied for fifth after shooting 71-73 – 144 (2-over) in his first 36 holes, while Tyler Uhlig carded an 80-68 – 148. Uhlig, a junior transfer, is coming off finishing as the runner-up at last week’s Tournament Town Preview for the Patriots who won the tournament. Uhlig birdied five holes in his 3-under-par second round. Sophomore Trystan Perkins is 20th overall with a 78-72 – 150 and DJ Godoy shot a 76-79 – 155 which puts him in a tie for 38th in the event that has 60 competitors.

UT Tyler is playing in its third of four fall tournaments this week after winning in Greensboro last Monday and finishing second at the Rhodes College Classic three weeks ago to open the season. The Patriots will return to Tyler after Monday’s round and then have two weeks away from competition before completing the fall season at the Golfweek Fall Invitational from Oct. 15-17 in Sandestin, Florida.
