PREVIEW: UT Tyler Cross Country to compete in Marshall

TYLER – After three weeks away from competition the UT Tyler cross country teams will run in their fourth of five regular-season meets on Saturday at the ETBU Tiger Invitational at the Marshall City Arena.

The women’s 6K is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. followed by the men at 8:45 a.m. in an 8K race.

The UT Tyler women’s team has been led this season by Rachel Willis in each of the first three meets, including the senior running a 20:25.1 in the 3.11-mile Rhodes College Cross Country Invitational in their last meet on Sept. 16 in Memphis, Tennessee. Willis opened the season by winning the UT Tyler King Campbell Spectacular with a run of 13:02 in the 2-mile race and then finished eighth at the Braveheart Invitational by running a 20:29.46. UT Tyler freshman Theresa Simmons was ninth at the Braveheart with a time of 20:36 and then ran a 20:38.7 in Memphis. Michaela Heys, Amy Wyatt, Courtney Smith and Lianne McKee will also run in Marshall.

The men’s team won the Braveheart Invitational and are coming off a 10th place finish in Memphis. Matthew Cecotti led the Patriots at the Rhodes event by running a 27:45 on the 4.97-mile course with Nathan Adams right behind with a time of 27:49.4. Justin Tokus came in at a time of 28:28.6, while Will McIlroy completed the race in 28:52.2. A sophomore, McIlroy had started the season by winning the 2-mile King Campbell Spectacular with a run of 10:41 and Tokuz taking second with a time of 10:41.99. Cecotti, who is a freshman, finished third in that season-opening meet for the Patriots and was 10th at the Braveheart.

The UT Tyler cross country programs will compete at the Mississippi College Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 14 in their final tune up before running at the American Southwest Conference Championships which will be hosted by Concordia at Old Settler’s Park on Saturday, Oct. 28 in Round Rock.
