JACKSON, Mississippi – Down 11 just seven minutes into the game, the UT Tyler men’s basketball team got its act together, fought back with a 21-0 run and ran away with a 94-68 win over Belhaven on Thursday at the Rugg Arena.

The Patriots (16-8, 9-8 ASC) improved to 8-5 away from home with the win, while the Blazers fell to 4-20 on the season. UT Tyler, which has one regular-season game remaining on its schedule, finished the game shooting 53.1 percent from the field and knocked down 19 free throws in the win.

Johnell Lane led the Patriots with 25 points after going 8-for-14 from the field, including knocking down four 3-pointers and five free throws. Emeka Obukwelu added 18 points and nine rebounds to fall one rebound shy of his 10th double-double of the season, while Skyler Hadden and Josh Tatum each added 10 points for the Patriots. Tatum led UT Tyler with four assists in the game and Melvin Anthony grabbed nine rebounds and scored seven points in 19 minutes.

UT Tyler trailed 23-12 before a pair of Obukwelu hit a pair of free throws to start a run that would eventually have the Patriots owning a 33-23 lead with five minutes to play in the first half.  The 21-0 run lasted eight minutes and included eight points from Obukwelu, a pair of 3-pointers from Lane and two layups from Hadden. The run was finally ended with a layup by the Blazers to make it 33-25 with 5:03 on the clock.

The Patriots owned multiple areas of the game, including posting a 42-23 rebounding advantage and outscoring the Blazers by a 48-18 margin in the paint. UT Tyler’s defense limited the Blazers to 33.9 percent shooting.

UT Tyler will close out the regular season with a 4 p.m. game on Saturday against Louisiana College in Pineville, Louisiana. The Patriots earned a 93-83 overtime win over the Wildcats in the first meeting in Tyler.
