TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s basketball team will close out the regular season this week with a road trip that takes them to Mississippi and Louisiana before heading to Big Bend Country next week for the American Southwest Conference Championship tournament in Alpine, Texas.

The Patriots (15-8, 8-8 ASC) will be the fourth seed out of the ASC East Division and will open the tournament against top-seeded Sul Ross (18-5, 13-2 ASC) next week, but not before playing Belhaven (2-14 ASC) at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Louisiana College (3-13 ASC) on Saturday in Pineville, Louisiana in the regular-season finale. UTT is currently 7-5 on the road this season and will look to sweep the season series against BU and LC after securing a pair of Herrington Patriot Center victories in mid-January with a 93-83 overtime win over the Wildcats before a 104-85 win over the Blazers.

UT Tyler comes into the final week of the regular season fifth in the nation with 449 total assists and leading the ASC with 19.5 assists per game and are 10th nationally with a 50.2 shooting percentage. The Patriots are second in the ASC with a 38.1 3-point shooting percentage and third with a 1.34 assist-to-turnover ratio. The team’s 449 assists are a program record that was established in the 2003-04 season.

Emeka Obukwelu leads the Patriots with 20 points and eight rebounds in his sophomore season, while senior point guard Josh Tatum is 10th nationally and has already set a program record with 139 assists this season. Obukwelu leads the ASC with nine double-doubles and is sixth nationally with a 68.4 shooting percentage and 206 field goals made. Obukwelu set a UT Tyler record earlier this season with 43 points in a win over Rhodes College and scored 25 against LC and 30 against Belhaven in the first meeting between the two teams. He was limited to only eight points last Saturday in the team’s loss to UT Dallas which was on the second time all season he did not score in double figures. Tatum is adding 10.6 points per game to go along with his 6.0 assists per game and is coming off a seven-assist performance against the Comets.

UT Tyler senior Melvin Anthony is adding 15.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game for the Patriots, while Skyler Hadden is averaging 13.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. A senior from Waco, Hadden led the Patriots with 20 points against the Comets after scoring 16 in last Monday’s win over Ozarks. Johnell Lane leads the Patriots with 55 3-pointers after knocking down five in the loss to UTD and is averaging 12.5 points per game for the Patriots. A sophomore transfer, Lane has started the last 14 games and is shooting 39.6 percent on 3-pointers. He has four games with five or more 3-pointers, including connecting on six against Ozarks and UMHB.

The Patriots come into the final two games on their regular-season schedule by limiting opponents to 43.8 percent shooting and having won two of their last three games.
