TYLER – Josh Tatum was an assist away from a triple-double after scoring 14 points, recording 10 rebounds and dishing out nine assists to help lead the UT Tyler men’s basketball team to a 90-83 win over East Texas Baptist on Saturday at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Patriots (14-7, 7-7 ASC) avenged an 80-79 loss to the Tigers (17-4, 11-3 ASC) last week in Marshall and snapped a three-game losing streak. The win takes the team to 7-2 on its home court going into a game on Monday against Ozarks back in the HPC.

On Saturday, Tatum recorded his fourth double-double of the season but his first with rebounds and points. He now has 126 assists this season which extends the program’s single-season record and has 203 in his career. He is only the second player in UT Tyler history to pass the 200-assist milestone and is approaching the all-time record of 207 by Larry Ward from 2006-09.

Emeka Obukwelu would be the major beneficiary of Tatum’s passing as the sophomore post went for 32 points for the Patriots. Obukwelu has now scored over 30 points in four games this season, including 33 on Thursday against LeTourneau. He’s leading the team with 20.8 points per game and scored his 32 against the Tigers by going 13-for-21 from the field and 6 of 9 at the free-throw line. Johnell Lane added 13 points after hitting three 3-pointers and Skyler Hadden added seven points, five assists and five rebounds. Jamal Green-Gaskin made his first start of the season and would contribute four points, three rebounds and two assists.

UT Tyler finished the game shooting 48.6 percent from the field, including knocking down six 3-poiters while ETBU struggled by shooting 39.5 percent overall and only 6-for-36 on 3-pointers. In the loss at Marshall, UT Tyler had trouble knocking down free throws but was able to close out the game on Saturday by making 16 free throws.

UT Tyler will return to action at 7:30 p.m. on Monday against Ozarks at the HPC before finishing off its four-game home stand on Saturday, Feb. 10 against UT Dallas. The game against the Comets is the team’s final regular-season home game with the program honoring its senior class of Tatum, Hadden, Mason and Melvin Anthony before tipoff.
