MARSHALL – What looked to be a UT Tyler win quickly turned into East Texas Baptist’s team and student section rushing the court after Westin Riddick hit a last-second 3-pointer to lift the Tigers to an 80-79 win over the Patriots on Thursday at the Ornelas Gym.

The Patriots (13-5, 6-5 ASC) led 79-77 after Johnell Lane buried a 3-pointer with 50 seconds remaining and Josh Tatum hit one of two free throws with eight seconds left, but ETBU’s Landin Brown would find Riddick who pulled up from NBA-range and hit his seventh 3-pointer of the game to give the Tigers (15-3, 9-2 ASC) the dramatic win.

Skyler Hadden scored a career-high 27 points for the Patriots after going 11-for-17 from the field along with grabbing seven rebounds and having four steals. Emeka Obukwelu added 15 points and five rebounds, while Tatum would finish with 10 points, five assists and two steals. Lane scored nine points in the game with four coming from the line on a night where he was limited to 1-for-6 on 3-pointers.

The Patriots finished the game shooting 48.4 percent from the field, but would be unable to pull off the win after going 14-for-25 at the free-throw line and struggling with a 5-for-19 night on 3-pointers.

ETBU finished the game 13-for-16 on 3-pointers and was 32-for-64 from the field to finish the game shooting 50 percent. Riddick led the Tigers with 25 points after going 7-for-12 on 3-pointers, including the game-winner. Jordan Gosey added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Darrice Whitley went for 11 points and also had four assists.

UT Tyler trailed 42-40 at halftime with Hadden leading the team with 11 points after hitting four field goals and three free throws, while Obukwelu had nine points and four rebounds as the teams went to the locker rooms for the break. UT Tyler was shooting 48.5 percent from the field despite going 1-for-9 on 3-pointers. Davis Moore hit the lone Patriot 3 in the first half, while ETBU was 6-for-12 on 3-pointers and was shooting 51.4 percent from the field. UT Tyler was 7 of 9 at the free-throw line and ETBU 0-for-5 at halftime.

UT Tyler returns to action against LeTourneau University at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Solheim Arena in Longview before hosting four straight games starting next week. The Patriots and Tigers will play again on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 4 p.m. in the Herrington Patriot Center.
