TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s basketball team is ready to continue building on its momentum from last season and will have its first practice of the 2017-18 season on Sunday with head coach Jamon Copeland set to begin his fifth season leading the Patriots.

Copeland and the Patriots are coming off a 15-win season last year where they had five American Southwest Conference all-conference selections and were the third seed out of the ASC East in the tournament. UT Tyler was an impressive 10-3 on the Herrington Patriot Center court last season and will play its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 28 against Texas Lutheran after opening its season with road games against three Southern Athletic Collegiate Conference opponents. The year begins on Thursday, Nov. 16 at Texas Lutheran followed by games against Southwestern on Nov. 18 and Austin College on Nov. 22 before TLU travels to Tyler to play in the HPC opener.

“I am really excited about our experience and depth,” Copeland said. “We have four returning starters and nine returners back which gives us a really good experience level on our team with a great understanding of how hard you have to work to be successful in the American Southwest Conference. Our depth this season is also something I am really excited about. We have 17 talented individuals who are all capable of being huge contributors for this team.”

The first practice of the season is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. on Sunday at the HPC for the mix of returners and newcomers who will look to build on last year’s success.

“We need to set the standard for how we are going to prepare day in and day out,” Copeland said. “If we bring a championship approach every day to our preparation, we will let the results come as they may. The beginning of the year is huge in the fact that you set the expectations for the standards that you hold not only yourself accountable to, but also your teammates to as well.”
