TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s basketball team cruised to an 82-56 American Southwest Conference win over McMurry on Monday with the team shooting 48.2 percent from the field and limiting the War Hawks to 26.5 percent at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Patriots (6-3, 3-1 ASC) have won five of their last six games and are now 4-1 on their home court this season. UT Tyler finished the final eight minutes of the first half on a 23-3 run and took a commanding 48-14 lead into halftime over the War Hawks who are now even with a 2-2 conference record with their loss.

Melvin Anthony and Verlo Levels led the Patriots in scoring, while Tyler Jacobs led the team with six rebounds to go along with four points. Anthony would finish the game with 19 points and five rebounds and now leads the Patriots with 15.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game this season, while Levels went for 16 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists. A sophomore from Tyler, Levels is averaging 12.1 points per game and is tied with Anthony for the team lead with 22 assists through nine games.

Emeka Obukwelu added 11 points after coming off the bench and going 4-for-5 from the field and 3-for-4 at the free-throw line, while Jordan Francis went for nine points and five rebounds as part of a starting five that played only 20 minutes due to the lopsided score. Josh Tatum, Levels, Skyler Hadden and Obukwelu each finished with three assists and Francis and Jacobs led the team with two steals.

UT Tyler finished the game shooting 27-for-56 from the field and hit six 3-pointers and were 22-for-27 from the free-throw line. Anthony led the team by knocking down 8 of 9 from the line and Levels was 4-for-4. McMurry struggled throughout with its shooting and finished 18-for-68 for its 26.5 percentage. Mike Williams Jr. led the War Hawks with 10 points off the bench.

The Patriots will not play the rest of the week and return to action next Monday against LeTourneau at 3 p.m. in Longview.
