PINEVILLE, La. – UT Tyler junior Deon Rodgers started scoring early in the game with the first points only :23 seconds into gameplay and didn’t slow up for the rest of the contest ending the night with 18 points and eight rebounds in a 77-71 loss to Louisiana College on Thursday at the H.O. West Fieldhouse.

The Patriots (10-8, 3-7 ASC) trailed by only 10 at the half, but were unable to cut at the lead in the second half allowing the Wildcats to get up by as many 21 before attempting a comeback and making the score tight at the finish.

With three minutes left of game play a layup from Anthony Gonzales Jr. would cut the gap to eight making it 63-55. Both teams traded points before Coach Copeland would call a .30 second timeout with 1:16 left and Gonzales taking shots from the charity stripe. Some fast game play and quick shots from the Patriots would show the fight left within the team and prove that the game wasn’t over yet. Time expired right after Rogers knocked in one more layup to end it down by six and boost the Wildcats record to 8-9 overall and 7-4 in conference play.

Along with Rodgers 18 points, Demarcus Metcalf added 13, Ty Davis knocked in 11 and Gonzales finished the night with 10. For the Wildcats, Anthony Gaines Jr. scored 16 and Steve Evans 14 to lead the team in the home-court win.

The men will continue in conference play with a road game against East Texas Baptist University this Saturday at 3 pm before returning home to face ETBU again Thurs. Feb. 4 at 7:30 pm. Follow all of the Patriot basketball action by checking out @uttylermbb on Twitter and Instagram.
