ASC PRESEASON MEN'S BASKETBALL POLL

RICHARDSON – UT Tyler’s Anthony Gonzales, DeMarcus Metcalf and Melvin Anthony have been identified on the American Southwest Conference Men’s Basketball Preseason Watch List and the Patriots are tabbed fourth in the East Division according to the preseason poll which was released on Wednesday and reflects the votes of conference head coaches, sports information departments and selected media members.

The Patriots received 34 points in the poll which puts them behind East Texas Baptist, Louisiana College and UT Dallas in the preseason ranking. ETBU went 26-6 last season and received 13 first-place votes and 83 points, while Louisiana College received one first-place vote and had 63 total points after going 14-10 last season. LeTourneau went 5-20 last season and is fifth in the preseason poll and Ozarks is sixth after going 8-18 in the 2014-15 season.

“We won’t focus on it,” said UT Tyler head coach Jamon Copeland of the preseason poll. “All of our focus and energy will be on the process of tapping out our potential, getting 1% better every practice. If we can commit to focusing on the process, we will be in a great position to have an incredible year. We have had a really good first week of practice because of how invested the guys are. Their commitment to each other and themselves makes them a really fun group to coach.”

Gonzales is a senior guard from Killeen who averaged 13.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game for the Patriots last season in his first year with the program. Gonzales hit 31 3-pointers and also had 28 assists. “I believe we will bring a lot of excitement to the court this year with the players we have,” Gonzales said. “It will be a sight to see.” Metcalf is a senior guard who played his high school basketball at W.T. White in Dallas before playing at Eastfield College. A 6-foot-5 guard, he averaged 19.3 points per game and was named the District 9-5A Offensive Player of the Year in his senior season at W.T. White. He would help Eastfield to the NJCAA National Finals and averaged 11.2 points per game and was in the top-20 in the nation in steals during his sophomore season. Anthony is a sophomore who is in his first season with the Patriots after transferring from Arkansas-Fort Smith. Also a Killeen native, Anthony averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds per game in his senior season for Killeen High before going to UAFS for his freshman season.

Hardin-Simmons was picked to win the West Division after going 20-7 last season, while UMHB is coming off a 17-9 season and was picked second. Concordia and Howard Payne each received one first-place vote and were tabbed third and fourth, respectively.

The Patriots will open their season on Sunday, Nov. 15 at Texas Lutheran in Seguin and will then play Texas State in an exhibition game on Monday, Nov. 16 in San Marcos. The home opener is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24 against Rust College at the Herrington Patriot Center.
