CLARKSVILLE, Ark. -- A three-pointer by freshman Billy Hopson with 1:07 remaining broke a 67-67 tie and helped the Patriots score a 74-71 win over Ozarks in American Southwest Conference men's basketball on Saturday afternoon.
The Patriots led by as many as eight in the second half before Ozarks rallied to take a 64-61 lead with 5:38 left in the game.
After Hopson's shot, Colby
Woolverton hit a three-pointer with 23-seconds remaining to
put the Ozarks (4-11, 2-10 ASC) within 72-70. UT Tyler then threw the
ball away to Ozarks on its inbound play and Marcus Bobb drew a foul and
hit one-of-two to pull Ozarks within 72-71 with 16 ticks on the clock.
The Patriots answered with one free throw from Stephan Tarpley and then Larry Carpenter proceeded to grab the
rebound on their missed free throw and go back to the charity stripe on another Ozarks foul. UT Tyler again made just one of its free throw attempts to give
Ozarks one last chance. However, the Patriots swarmed Woolverton, who
was unable to get a shot off, to secure the game.
Darren Houliston and Lance Murphy each had 13 points to lead UT Tyler, while Houliston added a game-high 13 rebounds.
Carpenter added 12 points for the Patriots to go along with five assists.
Bobb had 21 points for Ozarks to lead all scorers.
After a loss earlier in the week to Texas-Dallas, UT Tyler now sits at 5-10 (4-8 ASC) as they return to the Herrington Patriot Center for games against East Texas Baptist (Jan. 19) and Centenary (Jan. 21).
