TYLER – On a three-game winning streak and leading the American Southwest Conference in field-goal percentage and assists, the UT Tyler men’s basketball team returns to action this week with road games at East Texas Baptist on Thursday and LeTourneau on Saturday in ASC East Division play.

The Patriots (13-4, 6-4 ASC) are coming off a 14-point win at UT Dallas in last week’s lone game and enter this week leading the conference with 19.3 assists per game and a 50.9 shooting percentage which ranks sixth in the nation. UT Tyler’s assists per game is the eighth best throughout NCAA DIII and its 89.1 points per game is the 17th best in the country. Individually, Emeka Obukwelu is second in the nation with a 73.2 shooting percentage and is seventh with 156 field goals made, while Josh Tatum ranks 15th in the nation with 97 assists.

UTT and ETBU are scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Ornelas Gym in Marshall, while Saturday's game is set for 4 p.m. at the Solheim Arena in Longview. The Patriots are currently 7-3 away from home this season. 

ETBU (14-3, 8-2 ASC) and LeTourneau (14-3, 8-2 ASC) are atop the ASC East Division standings with their identical records. The Tigers are on a three-game winning streak that started with a 96-93 win over the YellowJackets and was followed by road wins at Louisiana College and Belhaven. ETBU leads the ASC with 11.2 3-pointers per game, while LETU is the top defensive unit in the league by limiting opponents to 41.8 percent shooting and is grabbing 31.65 rebounds on the defensive side of the court.

Obukwelu has recorded eight double-doubles this season for the Patriots, including going for 19 points and 10 rebounds in the win over UTD. He comes into this week’s games averaging 20.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in 16 of 17 games this season. A Plano native, Obukwelu scored a program record 43 points and had 17 rebounds in a win over Rhodes College and went for 30 points two weeks ago against Belhaven where he also had a career-high four blocked shots. Tatum has already broke the UTT single-season assists record with 97 this year by averaging 5.7 per game. A Keller native in his second season with the Patriots, he is also averaging 11 points and 1.9 steals per game from his point guard position. He led UT Tyler with 20 points and had four assists and four steals in the win over the Comets and had a season-best 22 points against Concordia. He set the single-game record with 12 assists last year against Belhaven and had a season-best 11 assists against UMHB this year.

Melvin Anthony is averaging 12.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, while Johnell Lane leads the team with 40 3-pointers and is contributing 12.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Lane is 40-for-98 on 3-pointers for the season with six 3-pointers in games against Ozarks and UMHB. He had a season-high 26 points at Ozarks and is coming off 11 points and five rebounds in the win at UTD. Skyler Hadden is adding 10.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game after going for nine points and five rebounds at UTD, while Xavier Fogle, Chase Mason and Cameron Frank are each adding five points per game.

UT Tyler will return to action after this week’s road trip by hosting four straight games to complete its home schedule for the season. The Patriots will host LeTourneau on Thursday, Feb. 1 and ETBU on Feb. 3 to finish off the home-and-away series against the East Division opponents.
