ABILENE – The UT Tyler men’s basketball team had its five-game winning streak end with a 93-79 American Southwest Conference loss at Hardin-Simmons on Monday at the Mabee Complex.

The Patriots (5-2, 2-1 ASC) were limited to 3-for-16 shooting from beyond the arc, while the Cowboys (6-4, 3-1 ASC) made 12 3-pointers on their home court for the victory. UT Tyler, which had not lost since taking a season-opening loss at No. 25-ranked Texas Lutheran a month ago, will return to action at 3 p.m. on Thursday at LeTourneau in its final game before a 10-day break.

Demarcus Metcalf and Deon Rodgers led the Patriots with 16 points each, while Melvin Anthony had 10 points in a game where the team owned a 62-44 scoring advantage in the paint but were overwhelmed by the 3-point disparity. UT Tyler had hit a season-high nine 3-pointers on Saturday in a 95-66 win at McMurry, but stayed in the game despite the 18.8 percent shooting from distance by going 35-for-76 (46.1 percent) from the field.

Rodgers and Metcalf each matched their season-highs with their 16 points, while Anthony Gonzales had 14 points for his seventh straight game in double-figures. Gonzales is the only play to have scored in double-figures in each game this season for the Patriots after hitting seven shots from the field to go along with five rebounds, five assists and two assists against the Cowboys. Metcalf, who leads the team with 6.1 rebounds per game this season, added six rebounds to his 16-point performance.

The Patriots were within four points when Anthony and Rodgers hit back-to-back shots to take the score to 59-55 with 12:44 to play, but the Cowboys went on a 7-0 run to withstand the charge. HSU would remain in control of the game and push its lead to 76-64 on a Duane Hopper layup and to 81-66 on a Caleb Spoon 3-pointer with 4:46 remaining in the game.

UT Tyler held three first-half leads, including a 18-15 advantage on an Anthony layup and midway through the half before the Cowboys took a 48-37 lead into halftime.

Cameron Barnes led the Cowboys with 29 points after going 11-for-18 from the field, including a 5-for-10 exhibition on 3-pointers. Barnes would be joined in double-figures by four teammates. Dashun Dixon added 11 points with three 3-pointers.
