Three UT Tyler Baseball Players Earn All-Region Honors
Three baseball players for The University of Texas at Tyler were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Division III All-West Region Team the ABCA announced this week.

Earning honors for the Patriots were senior Phil Grau, junior Kevin Noles and freshman Tim Matthews. All three were named to the region’s second team.

Grau, a senior outfielder from Chester, Ill. (Chester HS), was named first team All-Conference and started all 40 games for UT Tyler this season. He finished the year batting .436 to lead the team and finish fifth overall in the ASC. Grau was the leading scorer for the Patriots with 58 runs on the season. He also led the team in slugging percentage at .750, on-base percentage at .554 and home runs (11). His on-base percentage also led the ASC. Grau tied with fellow first team selection Noles for the most RBIs with 47.

Third baseman Noles, a junior from Levelland, Texas (Levelland HS) and also a first team All-ASC selection, led the ASC in triples with six and batted .405 on the season. Also playing in all 40 games for the Patriots, Noles racked up 11 doubles and four home runs while picking up 47 RBIs. He finished the year slugging .620 and had a .490 on-base percentage. Noles was named ASC East Player of the Week on April 25.

Matthews, a freshman from Carrollton, Texas (Newman Smith HS) led the UT Tyler and the ASC in wins with nine and complete games with eight on the season and finished third overall in strikeouts with an average of 9.44 per game. He finished the season at 9-2 for UT Tyler and pitched 75.1 innings, holding opponents to a .256 batting average. He had 79 total strikeouts on the year.

The right-handed pitcher was picked as the ASC East Freshman of the Year and was named to the East Division’s second team. He was a two-time ASC East Pitcher of the Week during the season.

This season UT Tyler won the 2005 ASC East Division championship with a 16-5 record and finished the year 30-7 overall.
