SAUGET, Illinois – UT Tyler senior Alex Bishop hit a three-run home run and finished with five RBIs, while Ryan Cheatham struck out six over 7 1/3 innings to lead the Patriots to an 8-5 win over Aurora in their first game of the NCAA Division III Central Regional on Thursday at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

The Patriots (30-16) scored four of their eight runs in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Bishop who has now had 14 RBIs and three homers in the past four games. UT Tyler will now play at 8 p.m. on Friday against No. 1-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater which earned a win over Monmouth on Thursday night.

“It’s always good to get that first win under your belt,” UT Tyler coach Brent Porche said. “It was good to get out there and knock the rust off a little bit and still be able to come out with a win. I’m proud of our guys and I have confidence we will come out tomorrow ready to go and keep things rolling in the right direction.”

Blake Wilson and Bowie Farris both added three hits for the Patriots, while Zack Pavelock drove in the first run of the game for the Patriots with a groundout in the second inning to cut a 2-0 deficit in half. Wilson extended a 19-game hitting streak by leading off the second inning and would score on the ground out.

Down 2-1 going to the bottom of the third inning, Jared Pauley led off the inning to extend a 12-game hitting streak and was followed by Tanner Roach extending an 11-game streak with a single of his own to start the big inning that would spark the regional-opening win. With two on and one out after a flyout, Wilson drew a walk to load the bases before Farris singled on a bunt that scored Pauley to tie the game. Roach was throw out at home trying to score on the play for the second out, but Bishop would step up and drill a full-count pitch over the fence for the seventh home run of his season and a 5-2 lead for the Patriots. With Cheatham continuing to cruise with scoreless innings in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth, UT Tyler would add to its lead in the seventh with another Farris RBI single and then Bishop driving in his fifth run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field.

UT Tyler senior Chris Stodolka would strike out three and record his second save of the season with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Stodolka struck out the first batter of the ninth before two walks would bring up the tying run, but he would finish off the game with a strikeout to strand the runners and advance the Patriots to the winner’s side of the eight-team regional.

Aurora (30-14) had 11 hits in the game, but stranded 12 in the three-run loss to the Patriots. The Spartans will now have to stave off elimination when they play tonight’s loser at 1:15 p.m. on Friday at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
