LONGVIEW – Down three runs, the UT Tyler baseball team loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth but were unable to bring any of them home in an 8-5 series-opening loss to LeTourneau on Friday at Conrad-Vernon Field.

The Patriots (24-14, 13-9 ASC) stranded 10 runners on base in the game, including the three in the ninth after the YellowJackets (21-15, 13-9 ASC) had taken an 8-5 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. The American Southwest Conference series will continue with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday in what will be the regular-season finales for both teams.

Bowie Farris and Josh Burns both had two-hit games for the Patriots in the opener, while Jared Pauley, Tanner Roach, Blake Wilson and Graham Welch each had one in an eight-hit game for UT Tyler. Farris drove in the first run of the game with a double into the left center field gap and also had an RBI single in the seventh that gave the Patriots a 5-4 lead.

LeTourneau would score three of its runs in the fourth, one unearned run in the seventh and then struck for three runs on three hits in the eighth.

Alex Masotto (2-2) would take the loss after allowing two hits, two walks and three earned runs in the eighth inning. UT Tyler starter Ryan Cheatham recorded four strikeouts and scattered six hits, while Chris Stodolka struck out the side but saw one run come in the seventh.
