JACKSON, Mississippi – UT Tyler junior Blake Maddox crushed a two-out, two-run home run in the first inning and Brandon Saddler allowed only one run through seven innings of work as the Patriots earned a 7-1 non-conference win over Millsaps on Tuesday at Twenty Field.

The Patriots (4-3) snapped a three-game losing streak of their own and ended a six-game winning streak by the Majors (6-3) in their first road game of the season. UT Tyler would score all seven of their runs in the first two innings of play, including getting a two-run single by Jordan Antley in the second inning, a pair of RBI singles by Blake Wilson and Maddox and an RBI triple by Josh Burns. UT Tyler scored its seven runs on seven hits in the opening two innings and would finish the game with 10 total hits.

“It was huge to jump out to an early lead and give our pitchers the ability to just fill up the strike zone and let them put the ball in play,” UT Tyler coach Brent Porche said.

Saddler made his second appearance and first start of the season and limited Millsaps to five hits in a 105-pitch performance. A senior from Frisco, Saddler struck out two and coaxed eight groundouts and 11 fly outs to record his first win as a Patriot. UT Tyler junior Adam Nelson threw the final two innings, striking out two and allowing only one hit in a pair of scoreless frames in his first outing of the year.

Maddox led the Patriots at the plate by going 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Antley was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Wilson would go 2-for-5 and now leads the Patriots with nine hits through seven games and Burns hit the first triple for the Patriots this season. Graham Welch, Zach Pavelock, Jared Pauley and Bowie Farris each had one hit each with Pavelock hitting his first double of the season.

The Patriots will return to action this weekend with a three-game series against Texas Lutheran on Friday and Saturday in Seguin. The non-conference set begins with a 7 p.m. game on Friday before a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at Kaat-Isbel Field.

“We are really looking forward to the challenge of playing TLU,” Porche said. “They are a great ball club, very well coached and always talented. It will be a big challenge for us on the road before starting conference play.”
