TYLER – The UT Tyler baseball team jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning and cruised to a series sweep after earning a 14-7 win over La Verne on Saturday at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (3-0) finished the game with a series high 15 hits and took the three-game series to open the season.

UT Tyler starter Simon Sedillo (1-0) earned the win after allowing only one run and five hits through five innings of work after his offense spotted him a six-run lead after the first inning and a 9-0 lead through three innings. Blake Maddox hit a two-run single down the right-field line and Tanner Roach had an RBI single to highlight the first-inning run production for the Patriots.

Zach Pavelock led the Patriots by going 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles, while Tanner Roach, Alex Bishop and Blake Wilson each had two-hit games. Josh Burns hit a solo home run down the left-field line to lead off the third inning and was followed by Jared Pauley and Jordan Antley each driving in runs in the inning. Ben Romines was 1-for-2, including his second double of the weekend and Roach and Bishop each had doubles.

UT Tyler used four relievers in the game with Colston Lloyd, Tyler Hollingsworth, Turner Givens and Chris Stodolka each throwing one inning each.

The Patriots finished the three-game series hitting .307 as a team, led by Roach and Bishop who each had four hits during the three-game weekend while Burns and Romines each had four RBI. UT Tyler finished the series outscoring the Leopards by a 29-15 margin to open the season.

The Patriots will return to action next weekend by hosting the Clements Fluids Classic at Irwin Field. The tournament begins for the Patriots by hosting Whitworth on Friday, followed by a Saturday night game against Trinity and then the final game of the series against Centenary on Sunday.
