TYLER – Gunnar Quick dove head first safely into home plate after a wild pitch at 11:40 p.m. to give the No. 3-ranked UT Tyler baseball team a 9-8 win over East Texas Baptist in 13 innings of the first game of the American Southwest Conference Championship Gold Bracket finals on Friday at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (38-7) are now one win away from winning their third straight ASC Championship, while the Tigers (30-14) will look to stave off elimination and force an if-necessary game. The two teams resume the series at 2 p.m. on Saturday following the nearly five-hour opener where the Patriots tied it in the bottom of the ninth with a Trenton Buchhorn two-out RBI single to score Graham Welch who had his third hit of the game to reach base. After three scoreless frames in extra innings, Tim Hunter lined a one-out single into left field but would be out at second on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Gunnar Quick. With two outs and Quick at first, Welch hit an infield single and then Daniel Williams was hit by a pitch to bring up Eric Wimpee with the bases loaded. Wimpee, who was a defensive replacement in the 12th, had not stepped to the plate all season and would see only one pitch that would get away from the catcher and bring home Quick on the wild pitch.

Cody Brown (9-2) earned the win after shutting the Tigers out with scoreless 12th and 13th innings with two strikeouts and only one hit allowed. Brown was making his fourth relief appearances and followed Reese Read who gave the Patriots three innings of relief with the Tigers striking out three times and managing only one hit. The bullpen was strong all night with Hunter Palmer throwing two perfect innings and Miles Thomas battling for 1 2/3 innings after replacing starter Ryan Cheatham who left after 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision.

Welch led the Patriots with three hits in the game, while Alex Bishop hit a three-run first-inning home run and finished the game 2-for-3 with those three RBI. UT Tyler had 14 hits in the game with Williams, Buchhorn and Broussard each had two hits in the game.

Bishop gave the Patriot a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning with his third home run of the season after Welch had singled and Williams walked with two outs. The home run was followed by Hunter driving in a run with a groundout in the second to score Ben Romines who had led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch. Kyle Broussard delivered a two-run single in the fifth inning to give the Patriots a 7-6 lead before ETBU took an 8-7 lead with wo in the seventh. Buchhorn’s single in the ninth tied it before the wild pitch ended the game.

UT Tyler is now 3-1 against ETBU this season with two of those wins coming in extra innings.
