AWARDS: Williams, Buchhorn, Brown earn ASC first-team honors

Wednesday, May 10, 2017

TYLER – UT Tyler seniors Daniel Williams, Trenton Buchhorn and Cody Brown were each named American Southwest Conference First-Team for the Patriots who had 14 all-conference selections in a vote of league head coaches in a season where they won the regular-season championship and are playing this weekend for their third straight ASC tournament title.

Along with the first-team selections, Ben Romines, Ryan Cheatham, Cason Adams and Reese Read earned second-team honors and Gunnar Quick and Kyle Broussard were named to the third team. Graham Welch, Miles Thomas, Blake Wilson Tim Hunter and Alex Bishop each received honorable mention selections after helping lead the Patriots to a dominant 21-3 record against conference opponents.

UT Tyler will host East Texas Baptist this weekend in the ASC Championship Gold Bracket finals starting at 7 p.m. on Friday and then at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Irwin Field. The Patriots took two of three at ETBU to end the regular season and will enter the series having won 23 of 26 games in Tyler this season.

Williams leads the nation with 76 hits this season and enters this weekend with a .418 batting average. A senior from Katy, Williams also leads the Patriots with 51 RBI, eight home runs and 12 doubles. His 51 RBI ranks 14th nationally and he is only three hits away from breaking the UT Tyler single-season hits record of 79 by Clay Baker in 2008. Williams blasted a three-run home run last Sunday in the ASC Blue Bracket final and is currently seventh in program history in RBI.

“Danny Williams is a special hitter,” Porche said. “Not only is he extremely strong and powerful, but he is a smart hitter. He has put up great numbers and he doesn't get pitched to all that much. He is able to be patient enough to get his pitch and does some serious damage when he does. He makes the hitters around him better.”

Buchhorn earned first-team honors for the second straight season after hitting .419 with 10 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 34 RBI. A senior from Arlington, Buchhorn had 11 multi-hit games this season and eight multi-RBI games.

“Bucky is one of the best all-around hitters I've ever coached,” Porche said. “He has the ability to drive the ball to both sides of the ballpark and has some other tools to go with it. He has done what we've asked in moving positions to the outfield this year and filled in at first base when needed as well. He is the emotional leader on our ball club and having him in the line-up makes us a better ball club.”

Brown is a four-time ASC Pitcher of the Week and enters the conference finals with an 8-2 record. A senior from Fulshear, Brown is second in the ASC with 78 strikeouts and owns a 2.74 ERA in 72 1/3 innings. Brown is coming off earning the win over Concordia in the ASC Blue Bracket finals and leads the team with five complete games and two shutouts.

“Cody Brown is an extremely talented pitcher, but more importantly, he is a warrior,” Porche said. “The guy has battled for his team every time out. It's nice to send a guy out there with dominate stuff in that 7-inning game every week knowing he is going to finish the game and keep you in it more times than not.”

Romines earns second-team honors after hitting .352 with six doubles, five triples, a home run and producing 20 RBI for the Patriots. A junior from Tyler, Romines has scored 31 runs and is one hit-by-pitch from tying Nathan Skeen (2010) with 17 for the program’s single-season record. Cheatham is 9-0 on the season and was named to the second team along with Adams who is 8-0 on the season. Cheatham has recorded 49 strikeouts and has a 2.82 ERA in a team-leading 76 2/3 innings, while Adams has 64 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings. Read is 10th nationally with eight saves and has 24 strikeouts and a 2.45 ERA in 22 innings.

Quick started all 44 games this season and is hitting .301 with 11 doubles and three home runs, while Broussard earned third-team honors after hitting .355 with 16 RBI. Hunter leads the nation with 59 walks and is second on the team with 42 runs scored as the team’s leadoff hitter, while Bishop is an honorable mention selection after missing over a month with injury but still hitting .327 with five doubles, three home runs and producing 21 RBI.
