The other side of the ASC tournament is in Richardson where UT Dallas is hosting the ASC Championship – Red Bracket with East Texas Baptist, Hardin-Simmons and Howard Payne playing at the UTD Baseball Complex. The winners of each bracket will meet next weekend in a best of three series with the highest remaining seed hosting. UT Tyler (33-6) won the ASC regular-season title and is the top seed and two-time defending champion of the tournament. The Patriots are 19-2 on their home field this season and have won 15 of their last 17 games and are coached by Brent Porche who is in his first season with the team. Porche owns a 180-89 career record after four years at LSU-Alexandria prior to Tyler.

Daniel Williams enters the postseason on an 11-game hitting streak and leading the ASC with a .424 batting average. A senior from Katy, Williams is eighth in the nation with 67 total hits and fourth in the ASC with 43 RBI. Williams, who is 12 hits away from Clay Baker’s single-season record of 79 total hits in 2008, also leads the Patriots with seven home runs and has 18 hits during his current 11-game hitting streak. He is tied with Gunnar Quick for the team lead with 11 doubles. Trenton Buchhorn is second on the team with a .416 batting average that includes nine doubles, two triples, three home runs and 28 singles. Buchhorn is second on the team with 28 RBI, including driving in five runs in a win over Ozarks.

Ben Romines has 12 multi-hit performances this season and is hitting .373 with five doubles, five triples, a home run and 30 singles. A junior from Tyler, Romines has 19 RBI and leads the Patriots with 14 hit-by-pitches which is three behind Nathan Skeen who holds the UT Tyler single-season record of 17 in 2010. Tim Hunter has led off all 39 games this season and leads the nation with 49 walks. A senior from Austin, Hunter’s 49 walks are two away from the UT Tyler single-season record of 51 by Kendall Fox in the 2008 season. He is second on the team with 35 runs scored and leads the Patriots with 14 stolen bases.

Quick leads the team with 39 runs scored and has 11 doubles, a triple, three home runs and 24 RBI on his resume. A senior from Lufkin, Quick earned ASC Hitter of the Week two weeks ago after a nine-hit, seven-RBI series against McMurry. Graham Welch missed the early part of the season but has hit .320 with 24 total hits and 14 RBI in 19 games this season. A sophomore outfielder, Welch has four doubles, two triples and two home runs for the Patriots while Alex Bishop is hitting .317 with 13 RBI in 24 games. Bishop returned from injury last weekend and delivered the game-winning two-run triple for the Patriots in a 7-5 extra-inning win to start their series at ETBU. He is a returning all-region selection like Buchhorn and has two home runs this season.

Kyle Broussard is hitting .320 with 12 RBI and 12 walks, while Brady McCoy is hitting .273 with 18 RBI as the team’s catchers. Broussard hit two home runs in a game against Ozarks and matched Hunter for the program’s single-game record with four walks in the series opener against McMurry. Opponents have been thrown out trying to steal 16 times this season.

On the mound, UT Tyler has been led this season by right-handed pitchers Ryan Cheatham (8-0), Cody Brown (7-2) and Cason Adams (7-0) who have started 32 of the 39 games this season. Brown is a senior from Fulshear who has earned four ASC Pitcher of the Week honors and enters the postseason with 69 strikeouts and a 2.73 ERA through 62 2/3 innings of work. Brown has record five complete games (7-innings) and two shutouts in his first season at UT Tyler after transferring from Sam Houston State. Cheatham is a junior from Whitehouse who joined the Patriots this season after two years at Tyler Junior College. Cheatham has recorded 46 strikeouts and has a 2.66 ERA in a team-leading 67 2/3 innings. Adams, a four-year pitcher from Rockwall, owns a perfect record this season has 56 strikeouts in 64 2/3 innings. He is 23-9 in his career and enters the postseason with 200 strikeouts which is the third most in program history. Adams is now 19 strikeouts from matching Blake Booher who had 219 strikeouts from 2006-09 and still a distance from Brett Holland who had 284 strikeouts from 2006-09.

From the bullpen, Reese Read (3-1) has recorded eight saves and 22 strikeouts in 18 appearances, while Hunter Palmer (1-1) has three saves and 24 strikeouts in a team-leading 20 appearances. Miles Thomas has made 15 appearances, with two starts, and is 1-0 on the season with one save and 19 strikeouts. UT Tyler is ranked third in the West Region behind Linfield and Cal Lutheran, with Centenary, Concordia and UT Dallas rounding out the top-six. The Patriots will host the West Region tournament from May 18-22 at Irwin Field. In the polls, UT Tyler is No. 3 in the Collegiate Baseball rankings, No. 6 in d3baseball.com and No. 8 by Perfect Game.
