MARSHALL – UT Tyler clinched the American Southwest Conference regular-season baseball title after Alex Bishop hit a two-run triple in the top of the 10th inning to lead the No. 3-ranked Patriots to a 7-5 series opening win over East Texas Baptist at Woods Field.

Bishop, who had missed over month with an injury, was 3-for-5 in his return that was capped by driving in the two game-winning runs for the Patriots who improved to 32-5 overall and to 20-2 in conference play. Reese Read (3-1) took the win after allowing the tying run in the ninth but then getting a lineout and two strikeouts in the 10th to finish off the game that was started by Ryan Cheatham who struck out five and allowed only three hits in five innings.

UT Tyler finished the game with 13 hits, including the three from Bishop and two-hit performances from Daniel Williams, Graham Welch and Blake Wilson. Williams continued his impressive season by blasting his seventh home run of the year to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Williams now leads the Patriots with the seven homers and 42 RBI, while Welch drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to give UT Tyler a 4-0 lead. Wilson would make it 5-1 in the sixth with an RBI single to left-center field to score Bishop who had hit a one-out single.

ETBU would score two in the sixth and then one run in the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game and force the first extra-inning game of the year for the Patriots. Williams led off the 10th with a single and was followed by a Jared Pauley bunt single. Bishop would drive a 3-1 pitch to the center field wall and dove in safely for his first triple of the season.

UT Tyler and ETBU will resume the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday to conclude the regular season. The Patriots will host next week’s ASC Championship Blue Bracket at Irwin Field as the conference’s top seed.
