TYLER – Dalton Smith drove in three runs and Blake Wilson had two RBI and two runs scored to help lead No. 3-ranked UT Tyler to a 9-5 non-conference win over Millsaps on Tuesday at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (26-4) extended an eight-game winning streak with the win and are now 16-2 at home this season. Daniel Williams went 3-for-5 in the game with two doubles and a single for UT Tyler which finished the game with 10 hits and swept the season series against Millsaps after also beating the Majors last Tuesday in Jackson, Mississippi.

Turner Givens (1-0) would get the midweek win after striking out three and limiting Millsaps to two runs in 2 2/3 innings in his first start. Given, who was making his fourth appearance of the season, walked only one and turned the ball over to Sam Sitton in the third inning with the bases loaded. Sitton, a junior left-hander, would need only three pitches to strike out a Major and keep the Patriots ahead 3-2. UT Tyler scored three runs in the second and fifth innings, with Smith and Wilson both driving in runs with singles in the fifth. Wilson scored twice on passed balls, including the third run in the fifth. Wilson would double to lead off the seventh inning and scored the final run of the game on a passed ball with two outs.

Chris Stodolka, Ryan Cheatham, Hunter Palmer and Cade Suggs each threw one inning of relief for the Patriots. Suggs, a senior from Tyler, closed out the game with three strikeouts in the ninth inning to maintain the four-run win.

Josh Burns went 2-for-5 in the game and scored two runs, while Ben Romines was 1-for-1 with two walks and a third inning RBI single. Smith and Wilson were both 2-for-3 in the game with a single and double. Smith’s double came in the second inning and scored Romines and Wilson for the first two runs of the game.

Williams is now hitting .438 with 53 total hits this season after his fifth three-hit game and 15th multi-hit performance of the season. Tim Hunter added two walks and now has 39 through 30 games.

UT Tyler returns to action this weekend with a three-game series at Louisiana College. The series begins at 6 p.m. on Friday before playing a noon doubleheader in Pineville, Louisiana.
