TYLER – The No. 2-ranked UT Tyler baseball team hosts No. 8 Centenary at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup that will end an 11-game home stand at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (18-3) earned a 4-1 win over the Gents (19-3) in the finale of the Clements Fluids Classic on Feb. 19 in the first meeting between the two teams. UT Tyler will be coming off a three-game American Southwest Conference sweep of Sul Ross and have won 11 of its last 12 games, while Centenary is on a 12-game winning streak following a sweep of Schreiner last weekend in Shreveport. The Gents have not lost since the Patriots dealt them the defeat which came after they had lost to Mary Hardin-Baylor on the second day of the tournament.

UT Tyler is 9-1 on the home stand and is 12-1 at home overall this season with its only loss coming last Tuesday to Southwestern. The Patriots are now ranked No. 2 in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Poll and are No. 6 in and the NCBWA DIII Poll

Miles Thomas (0-0) is scheduled to make his first start of the season for the Patriots after coming out of the bullpen nine times. A junior left-hander form Clinton, Mississippi, Thomas has a 1.59 ERA through 11 1/3 innings with 13 strikeouts and only eight hits allowed. He recorded a season-best four strikeouts last Tuesday against Southwestern in 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Thomas earned a save with two scoreless innings against Belhaven and enters Tuesday’s start having allowed only two earned runs and seven walks.

Daniel Williams leads the Patriots with 27 RBI and a .422 average (35 total hits), while Trenton Buchhorn is hitting .390 with 30 hits and 18 RBI. Williams extended his hitting streak to nine games after having one hit in each win over the Lobos, while Buchhorn smashed a solo home run in the series finale for his first homer of the season. Tim Hunter took five walks last week and leads the nation with 26 walks, while Gunnar Quick is leading the team with 22 runs scored after reaching on 22 hits and 12 walks. Alex Bishop enters this week with 20 hits and eight RBI, while Jared Pauley has 21 hits. Brady McCoy and Blake Wilson have provided 15 hits each with McCoy driving in 12 runs, while Graham Welch went 2-for-3 with two singles and a sacrifice fly in his first game of the season on Saturday. Welch set the program’s record with 10 triples last season as a freshman.

UT Tyler is hitting .313 as a team with 27 doubles, five triples and six home runs coming into this week. The Patriots will return to ASC play this weekend against Ozarks in a three-game series starting at 2 p.m. on Friday before a noon doubleheader on Saturday in Clarksville, Arkansas.
