TYLER -- The No. 5 UT Tyler baseball team lost for the first time since Feb. 25, falling 5-1 to Southwestern Tuesday night at Irwin Field.

The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Patriots, who fell to 15-3 with the loss.

The Pirates scored a run each in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead as their pitcher Colton Hunter held the Patriots to six hits in seven innings.

UT Tyler cut the Southwestern lead in half in the bottom of the seventh when Brady McCoy doubled home Trenton Buchhorn with one out. McCoy, however, was stranded at second.

An inning later, the Patriots had runners on first and third with one out, but couldn’t get the tying run across and went to the ninth trailing 2-1.

In the top of the ninth, the Pirates plated three runs to put the game out of reach. The Patriots got two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t push a run across.

Max Page (1-1) started for the Patriots and took the loss after giving up two runs in three innings. He was followed in the game by six relief pitchers, all of which kept the Pirates off the scoreboard until they got three off Hunter Palmer in the ninth.

Tim Hunter led the Patriots offensively with a pair of hits. McCoy had the only RBI for UT Tyler with his seventh-inning double.

UT Tyler will return to American Southwest Conference play this weekend when they host Sul Ross State. The teams will play one game at 6 p.m. on Friday and a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
