TYLER – UT Tyler pitcher Ryan Cheatham faced the minimum in a complete-game win and Cason Adams struck out seven as the No. 8-ranked Patriots completed a three-game non-conference sweep of Northland College with 7-0 and 9-4 wins in a Thursday afternoon doubleheader at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (15-2) improved to 9-0 at home with the sweep and have now won seven in a row after topping the Lumberjacks (0-6) by a 19-6 combined margin during the three-game series. UT Tyler will be off this weekend but will return to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday against Southwestern and then Sul Ross next weekend at Irwin Field.

Cheatham (5-0) would strike out six and allow only two hits in a complete-game win which were dealt with by turning double plays in the third and fifth innings. Cheatham faced only 21 batters in the game and became the first five-game winner of the season for the Patriots with his best performance.

Tim Hunters was 0-for-0 in the game with three runs scored as he matched a UT Tyler single-game record by drawing four walks as the team’s leadoff hitter, while Daniel Williams went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the game and Alex Bishop was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Adams (3-0) earned the win in the second game of the day by striking out seventh and limiting the Lumberjacks to two hits through six innings. Adams was perfect through four innings and wouldn’t allow a hit until one out in the fifth. Gunnar Quick led the offensive production in the game with a 3-for-5 day with two RBI, while Hunter was 1-for-1 with two RBI and two more walks. The Patriots finished the game with nine hits with Williams, Brady McCoy, Kyle Broussard, Landon Shofner and Jared Pauley having hits.

Williams and Quick led the Patriots with five hits each in the series, while Hunter walked eight times during the three games including six straight times that started with a bases-loaded walk to bring home the winning run in the series opener on Wednesday. Williams had four RBI in the midweek series and now has 25 RBI through 17 games.

A junior right-hander, Cheatham owns a 1.97 ERA and has recorded 24 strikeouts in 32 innings while Adams has 29 strikeouts in 28 1/3 innings.

UT Tyler is 1-0 against Southwestern this season after going on the road and earning a 7-3 win in Georgetown on Feb. 21. The Patriots are 6-1 going into their ASC series next weekend against Sul Ross, while the Lobos are currently 8-10 overall and 1-2 in conference play coming into their series against UT Dallas this weekend in Alpine.
