TYLER – The UT Tyler baseball team has soared to a No. 8 national ranking with its 12-2 record in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top-25 Poll and will host Northland College on Wednesday and Thursday in a three-game non-conference series at Irwin Field.

The Patriots have climbed the rankings from a preseason No. 20 to last week’s No. 13 before entering the top-10 following a dominant sweep of Belhaven last weekend. UT Tyler has outscored its opponents by a 98-50 margin and enters this week with a .335 team batting average and a 3.27 pitching staff earned run average. The 12-2 start to the season is the fourth best 14-game start in program history behind only 2007 (14-0), 2008 (13-1) and 2011 (14-0).

UT Tyler is the highest ranked team from the American Southwest Conference and the state of Texas with UT Dallas (12-2) at No. 15 being the only other school in the rankings. Emory (12-1) is the top-ranked team in the nation in this week’s poll, followed by Shenandoah (10-0), Cortland (5-2), Birmingham-Southern (11-3), Wisconsin-Whitewater (0-0), Ramapo (0-0) and Wisconsin-La Cross (1-1) currently ahead of the Patriots.

UT Tyler will host Northland College (0-2) in a three-game series starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday before a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday. The Jacks started their season by getting swept by Centenary last weekend and are playing one game at UTD on Tuesday. Max Page (1-0) is scheduled to make his third start of the season on Wednesday after getting a no-decision last Tuesday at LSU-Alexandria. A sophomore left-hander, Page earned his first win of the season in a five-inning start at Southwestern two weeks ago. He has also made three relief appearances this season. Cason Adams (2-0) will start the first game on Thursday after earning a win over Belhaven in the finale last Saturday, while Ryan Cheatham (4-0) takes the ball against NC in the finale. Cheatham is coming off an eight-strikeout performance against the Blazers in the series opener last Friday to keep his record perfect through four starts.

Trenton Buchhorn and Daniel Williams lead the team with 26 hits each, while Gunnar Quick has scored 17 runs and has matched Buchhorn with five doubles for the team lead. Buchhorn extended his hitting streak to 10 games after finishing last week with six hits and helping the Patriots to a 4-0 week. A senior outfielder, he had a triple in a road win at LSU-Alexandria and would then have five hits against the Blazers who were swept in Tyler. He also led UT Tyler with six runs scored and is now hitting .448 with 26 hits through 14 games. Williams blasted his third home run of the season and the sixth of his career in the series finale and leads the Patriots with a .456 batting average and 21 RBI through 14 games at designated hitter. Alex Bishop went 4-for-8 in the series against the Blazers to raise his average to .348 while Ben Romines had four hits and is now hitting .412 on the season with three doubles and a triple. Jared Pauley has started all 14 games in center field and has added 17 hits, while Brady McCoy has added 13 hits and is at .302 for the season. Tim Hunter has scored 11 runs and has 14 hits from the leadoff spot of the lineup, while Blake Wilson has 12 hits for the Patriots entering the week.

UT Tyler senior Cody Brown recorded a career-best 11 strikeouts in a 4-0 complete-game win over Belhaven last Saturday and was named the ASC Pitcher of the Week. Brown, who is not scheduled to start in the series against Northland College, threw the first complete-game for the Patriots this season and earned the win in the second game of the series as the Patriots took the win in seven innings with BU being limited to six hits.  Brown now has 31 strikeouts and a 2.74 ERA through four starts and 23 innings for the Patriots this season. Hunter Palmer and Reese Read lead the team with three saves each, while Evan Kissinger (2-0) has two wins from the bullpen in four appearances. Palmer has recorded 12 strikeouts and has not allowed a run in 12 innings of work, while Read has six strikeouts in six innings. Miles Thomas joins Read in having made six appearances from the bullpen and has record nine strikeouts with only two runs allowed in 9 1/3 innings of work. The UT Tyler pitching staff has its 3.27 ERA and has recorded 114 strikeouts with only 53 walks in 121 innings of work this season.

UT Tyler will return to action after its Wednesday/Thursday series against Northland College by hosting Southwestern next Tuesday before returning to ASC play next weekend with a three-game series against Sul Ross at Irwin Field. The Patriots are currently three games into an 11-game home stand and are 6-0 in Tyler.
