TYLER – The No. 13-ranked UT Tyler baseball team earned an 8-3 win over Belhaven in the opener of a three-game series on Friday with the Patriots scoring three runs in the seventh and eighth innings at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (10-2, 3-1 ASC) improved to 4-0 at home with the win and will host the Blazers (7-2, 2-2 ASC) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday on Military Appreciation Day.

Ryan Cheatham (4-0) gave up a three-run home run to Terrell Hodges in the third inning, but would earn his fourth straight win by shutting down the Blazers with eight strikeouts and allowing only four hits in seven innings of work. Cheatham would exit the game on his eighth strikeout to end the top of the seventh down 3-2 but would see Gunnar Quick lead off with a double, Alex Bishop hit a single to score Quick to tie the game and then Trenton Buchhorn drill a double to the right-center field gap to give the Patriots a 4-3 lead. UT Tyler would add its third run of the inning with Buchhorn stealing home on a first-and-third situation and the Blazer pitcher unable to make sense of the double steal by the Patriots.

UT Tyler led 5-3 after seven innings and added three more runs in the eighth with Quick hitting an RBI triple down the left field line, Buchhorn getting an RBI by being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Brady McCoy taking a bases loaded walk for the final run. The Patriots finished the game with 10 hits in the series opener, while Cheatham and reliever Miles Thomas limited the Blazers to six hits. Thomas would record his first save of the season after striking out two and allowing only two hits in two innings.

Quick led the Patriots by going 3-for-5 with one RBI, while Buchhorn had three RBI on his third double of the season and the hit-by-pitch. Tim Hunter added two hits from the leadoff spot in the lineup, while Bishop, McCoy, Ben Romines and Blake Wilson also had hits for the Patriots.

Tanner Cable (1-1) took the loss for Belhaven after striking out six but allowing four earned run in 6 1/3 innings. Hodges finished the game 2-for-3 with the three-run home run, while Gabe Vieth hit a pinch-hit double.
