TYLER – Hunter Palmer struck out five of the final six batters in a two-inning save after Josh Burns drove in a go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh to lift the No. 18-ranked UT Tyler baseball team to a 6-5 non-conference win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday in the second day of the Clements Fluids Classic at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (4-1) finished the game with 12 hits after being limited to four in Friday’s win over Trinity with seven players getting hits. Evan Kissinger (1-0) earned his first win as a Patriot after getting the final two outs of the seventh inning in relief of starter Cason Adams who went 6 1/3 innings with five strikeouts in a 94-pitch no-decision. Kissinger would allow two hits but no runs before turning the ball over to Palmer after a leadoff single to start the eight after Burns had given the Patriots a 6-5 lead with a single to center field. Palmer inherited a runner on first and then surrendered a single, but would strike out the side to escape the eighth with runners being stranded on second and third.

Palmer would secure his second save of the season with two more strikeouts, including a three-pitch strikeout to end the game.

Alex Bishop led the Patriots at the plate by going 3-for-4, while Daniel Williams and Gunnar Quick were both 2-for-4 and Tim Hunter 2-for-3. Williams is now 11-for-21 to start the season (.524) and Bishop is hitting .368 through five games. UT Tyler scored three runs in the second inning, with Quick scoring on a steal of home after he had doubled to center field. The Patriots then took a 5-2 lead in the fourth with Hunter hitting an RBI double and then scoring on a wild pitch before UMHB tied the game with one run in the fifth and two in the seventh.

Tied at five in the bottom of the seventh, Bishop would reach on a two-out single and was followed by another single by Williams. Bishop would score from second base on Burns’ hit to take the lead.

UT Tyler will return to action at 4 p.m. on Sunday against Centenary in the final game of the Clements Fluids Classic at Irwin Field.
