TYLER – Alex Bishop and Trenton Buchhorn were two of the most productive hitters in the nation this season for the UT Tyler Patriots and have earned 2016 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. III All-West Region second-team honors.

Buchhorn led the American Southwest Conference with 60 RBI in his junior season, while Bishop established a new program record with 22 doubles and was third in the ASC with 72 hits in his sophomore campaign. Buchhorn was also selected to the ASC first-team, while Bishop was a second-team all-ASC selection for the Patriots who won their second straight ASC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship where they earned two wins last weekend in Spokane before seeing their season end at 32-19 with a 3-2 loss to Pacific Lutheran.

The ABCA All-Region teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. III All-America Committee. ABCA/Rawlings All-Region first-team selections are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. ABCA/Rawlings All-Americans and Gold Glove winners will be announced on Thursday.

Buchhorn, an infielder who played shortstop, second base and third base, transferred to UT Tyler this season after serving as a student assistant coach at Tyler Junior College. After not playing in three seasons, Buchhorn didn’t miss a beat and immediately became one of the most feared hitters in the UT Tyler lineup. He would produce 60 RBI this season which is the second most in program history and only three behind Brett Amyx who drove in 63 runs in the 2007 season and would also hit seven triples which is second only behind his teammate, Graham Welch, who established a new record with 10 this season. Buchhorn hit .318 for the season with 17 doubles, seven triples and was tied with Bishop for the team lead with six home runs.

Along with his six home runs, Bishop finished the season with 22 doubles, three triples and drove in 53 runs. A left-handed hitter like Buchhorn, Bishop hit .407 and owned a .524 on-base percentage with a team-leading 36 walks and was hit 13 times.

Bishop and Buchhorn both started all 51 games for the Patriots and were two of 11 all-region selections from the conference.

The ABCA All-America team was first recognized in 1949 and now includes nine divisions: NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA Divisions I, II and III, Pacific Association Division, and high school. ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove teams were first recognized in 2007.

The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 8,200 members represent all 50 states and 23 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth. The 73rd annual ABCA Convention will be held Jan. 5-8, 2017 in Anaheim, California.
