SPOKANE, Wash. – The UT Tyler Patriots scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on four hits to take a 6-4 win over No. 18-ranked Whitworth at the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Spokane Regional on Thursday at Avista Stadium.

The Patriots (32-17) are now 2-0 at the regional tournament and will play No. 3 Trinity at 2 p.m. on Friday in a matchup of the only two unblemished teams in Spokane after two days of play. The Tigers (37-7) are also 2-0 at the tournament after eliminating Case Western Reserve with a 10-0 win on Thursday.

UT Tyler led 1-0 over the Pirates in the fifth with Brady McCoy hitting a solo home run and then had a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Alex Bishop blasted a double off the right-field wall to score Graham Welch. Whitworth, which is hosting the tournament, would never go away though and tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh and then took a 4-2 lead in the top of the eighth on a Casanova triple. Down two, the Patriots made yet another comeback with Welch hitting a one-out single and then scoring on a Blake Wilson single to left field to make it a one run game. After a Bishop walk, Trenton Buchhorn single and a fielder’s choice, Daniel Williams came to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded.

Williams, who was 0-for-2 in the game, would push an opposite-field single to left field to drive in two runs and another run would score on a throwing error. Williams extended his team-leading 12-game hitting streak with the single and the Patriots took a 6-4 lead which closer Reese Read held firm with two fly outs and a ground out to Buchhorn at shortstop to end the game.

Chris Stodolka (1-0) would be credited with the win despite allowing two runs in the eighth inning which was his only inning of work. Stodolka relieved starter Michael Blevins who had a strong game with seven strikeouts and only one walk through seven innings of work. Blevins, who now has 157 strikeouts in his career, scattered 10 hits and left the game with the scoreboard showing a 2-2 ballgame. Read would earn his sixth save of the season and his second in Spokane after he also secured the save in Wednesday’s win over Cal Lutheran. Blevins was continuously able to get out of trouble, including coaxing a line drive to third that Blake Wilson made a sensational diving catch on to end the first inning with the bases loaded. The Pirates stranded nine runners in the game, while the Patriots left only four on base.

Welch led the Patriots at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored from the leadoff spot in the lineup while Buchhorn was 2-for-4 in the game. Welch is now 5-for-9 in Spokane with four runs scored in two games, while Bishop now has 71 hits this season and has reached base in 36 straight games after his sixth inning double. The double was his 21st of the season which extends the single-season program record.

Whitworth will play an elimination game against Pacific Lutheran at 5:15 p.m. on Friday with that winner to face the UT Tyler-Trinity loser in Friday’s nightcap at 8:30 p.m. in another elimination game. Pacific Lutheran knocked out Cal Lutheran on Thursday making the Spokane Regional a four-team competition after two days of play.
