SPOKANE, Wash. – Graham Welch threw out the potential tying run at home for the second out in the ninth inning, Alex Bishop drove in three runs and Cason Adams struck out six and limited Cal Lutheran to two runs in seven innings of work to help lead UT Tyler to a 4-3 win over the Kingsmen at Wednesday’s NCAA Division III Spokane Regional opener at Avista Stadium.

The Patriots (31-17) move into the regional’s winner bracket where they will play at 8:30 p.m. (CDT) on Thursday against Whitworth which won 8-5 over Case Western Reserve on the first day of the tournament. UT Tyler, which is the fifth seed in the tournament, sends CLU (31-12) to an elimination game on Thursday against Case Western.

Bishop would provide three of four runs for the Patriots in the game with a sacrifice fly in the first inning to Welch who led the game off with a double to right-center field and then the biggest hit of the game in a three-run fifth. Following a Welch RBI single to right-center, Bishop hit an opposite-field two-run triple off the left-center field fence to score Welch and Brady McCoy who had walked.

Adams (8-2) put on a show in the regional opener on the mound with his six strikeouts and scattering seven hits. The junior from Rockwall stranded six CLU runners on base, including in the first inning where he worked his way out of a one-out bases loaded jam. Chris Stodolka recorded three outs in the eighth inning and also stranded the bases loaded when he coaxed a lineout to Braxton Hollenshead at second base. Reese Read would come into the game in the ninth and earn the save, but not before CLU opened the inning with two hits and then moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Gabe Gunter singled through the left-side of the infield to easily score the runner at third but Welch delivered a strike from left field to Brady McCoy at home to throw out the tying run for the second out. Read would get the final out to fly out to Sam Lane in center field for his fifth save of the season the fifth NCAA win in program history.

Welch led the Patriots by going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Bishop was 1-for-2 with his third triple of the season and now has 52 RBI and is hitting .417 on the season. Bishop has now reached base in 35 straight games and has 17 multi-RBI performances, while Daniel Williams went 1-for-4 with a single to extend an 11-game hitting streak. Sam Lane and Josh Burns would add hits for the Patriots who had seven hits in the game. UT Tyler is now 11-4 this season in games that Adams starts.

CLU finished the game with 12 hits, including leadoff hitter Davey Cascio going 4-for-5, but would strand 10 throughout the game including a runner at second base. The Kingsmen will play at 2 p.m. (CDT) against Pacific Lutheran in an elimination game after PLU took a 7-3 loss to Trinity in the first game of the tournament.
