AUSTIN – Alex Bishop blasted a three-run home run in the seventh and added another RBI in the eighth to lead the UT Tyler baseball team to an 8-4 win over LeTourneau in the first game of the American Southwest Conference Blue Bracket Championship on Friday at Tornado Field.

Bishop, who drove in the first run of the game in the first inning on a fielder’s choice, finished the game with five RBI including his fifth home run of the season. The Patriots (26-15) led 3-0 after the first inning before seeing the YellowJackets take a 4-3 lead with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings before the comeback was made. Bishop now has a team-leading 15 multi-RBI games this season and lifts the Patriots to the ASC Championship’s winners bracket where they will play at 4 p.m. on Saturday against Concordia. The Tornados earned a 2-0 win over Texas Dallas in the second game of the day.

“I was just making sure I was on time and was looking first-pitch fastball and hit it,” said Bishop, who is hitting .425 this season. “It felt good. It was important to come back and support him after a great outing. We had a couple of errors that killed us so it was important for our offense to respond to the adversity.”

Collin Belcher (1-0) earned the first win of his career in relief after getting the final out in the top of the seventh on a diving double play catch by shortstop Trenton Buchhorn. Cason Adams did not receive a decision in his start where he struck out six over 5 1/3 innings. Adams scattered six hits and walked only one in an outing where he gave up one earned run. Max Page, Jacob Clark and Chris Stodolka each had relief appearances before closer Reese Read closed out the ninth – ending the game with the eighth UT Tyler strikeout of the night.

“I think was a good momentum booster,” Adams said. “We’ve won six of the last seven so it keeps the ball rolling. We were hitting the ball well so that was good.”

UT Tyler finished the game with 12 hits with Bishop, Buchhorn, Blake Wilson and Sam Lane each having two-hit games for the Patriots. Buchhorn was 2-for-5 with a first-inning double to left-center field which produced his conference-leading 53rd RBI of the season. Wilson was 2-for-4, while Josh Burns hit a run-scoring double down the left-field line to produce a run the bottom of the sixth. Bishop’s blast went well over the left-field fence marked at 370’ at Tornado Field and came with Wilson and Graham Welch on base. Welch, who doubled to reach base, scored three runs in the game to lead the Patriots.

Andrew Harlan (4-7) took the loss for the YellowJackets after surrendering four earned runs over 6 1/3 innings of work. LeTourneau will play at 1 p.m. on Saturday in an elimination game. UT Tyler improved to 26-11 all-time in ASC tournament play.
