TYLER – Down three runs coming into the ninth inning, UT Tyler scored two but had the tying run thrown out at home as they fell 5-4 in their series opener against Howard Payne on Friday at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (20-13) have now lost four straight games for the only time this season with all four losses coming at home. HPU (18-13, 9-9 ASC) scored four of its five runs in the sixth inning and overcame a game where it made three errors.

Daniel Williams led the Patriots with a 2-for-2 performance with two doubles and an RBI, while Alex Bishop drove in two runs on one hit and Josh Burns produced an RBI on one hit. The Patriots finished the game tied with the Yellow Jackets with each team having eight hits in the game.

Cason Adams (5-2) took the loss for the Patriots after surrendering five earned runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings of work, while Kyle Roman (4-2) earned the win for HPU after striking out four and scattering six hits through eight innings. Roman left with a 5-2 lead and saw Zach Moseley survive and earn a save after the final out in the ninth ended a two-run, two-hit inning. The series will resume at 1 p.m. on Saturday with a doubleheader at Irwin Field. The final two regular-season home games will feature a senior day ceremony between games.
