JACKSON, Miss. – Graham Welch and Trenton Buchhorn drove in two runs each to help lead No. 12 UT Tyler to a 5-4 series-opening win over Belhaven on Friday at Smith-Wills Stadium after the Patriots had fallen behind 3-0 after the first inning.

UT Tyler (19-8, 9-4 ASC) earned its third straight win despite matching a program record with six errors in the game in large part due to Welch who drove in the first Patriot run of the game with his seventh triple of the year in the third inning and Buchhorn who delivered what proved to be the game-winning run with a one-out single in the seventh inning. Welch's triple was his seventh this season which establishes a new single-season program record that was tied with teammate Sam Lane (2015), Kevan House (2013) and Kevin Noles (2005).

Cason Adams (4-1) earned the win after scattering seven hits – four of which led off the game – and striking out two in 7 1/3 innings of work. Chris Stodolka would secure two outs in the eighth and Reese Read closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his second save of the season.

UT Tyler, which is now 5-0 in one-run games this season, got back into the game in the third inning with Samuel Plotkowski leading off the inning with a triple and then Welch driving him in with his conference-leading seventh triple of his freshman season. The RBI triple was followed by Blake Wilson blasting a double off the right-field wall to drive in Welch and make it a one-run game before another Welch RBI in the form of a fourth-inning single tied the game at 3-3. The Patriots would take their first lead of the game in the fifth inning with Sam Lane leading off with a single and scoring on a Buchhorn double to center field. Buchhorn now leads the ASC with 36 RBI and has 12 doubles this season.

Welch finished the game with a 3-for-5 night with his two RBI, while Lane, Alex Bishop and Buchhorn each had two hits. Lane extended his hitting streak to 11 with his two-hit performance, while Bishop now leads the team with a .432 average, 41 hits and 13 doubles. Buchhorn, Lane and Bishop each have 13 multi-hit performances this season, while Buchhorn now has 10 multi-RBI games to lead the team.

UT Tyler will send Nate Imig to the mound at 1 p.m. to start the second game of the series, while Chad Hayes is scheduled to make his first start of the season. The Blazers fell to 16-11 on the season with the loss after they were limited to seven hits and were unable to capitalize on the six Patriot errors. UT Tyler finished the game with 12 hits and is now 6-4 away from home entering Saturday’s doubleheader.
