TYLER – Nate Imig and Tyler Stallings were dominant on the mound and Graham Welch and Trenton Buchhorn provided offensive punch as the No. 15-ranked UT Tyler Patriots earned a doubleheader sweep with a 9-0 win in the opener and an 8-2 victory in the finale over LeTourneau on Friday at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (18-8, 8-4 ASC) bounced back from a 7-3 loss on Thursday against the YellowJackets (6-11, 3-6 ASC) in the opener to win the series and improve to 13-4 at home going into a bye week. UT Tyler will return to action against Belhaven on April 8-9 in Jackson, Mississippi before playing at home again on April 15-16 against Ozarks.

Welch and Alex Bishop led the Patriots in the three-game series with six hits each, while Buchhorn would provide six RBI over the three games including three in the finale. Welch went 4-for-5 with a double and three singles in the finale and Bishop was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored as the Patriots closed out the series with the 8-2 lead where Stallings (4-1) earned the win after limiting LETU to one run on three hits through five innings. He would exit with a 4-0 lead after Buchhorn had delivered a third-inning sac fly to score the first run and then the Patriots put a three-spot on the board in the fifth with Bishop driving in a run on a fielder’s choice and then Dalton Smith producing a run on a single to left.

UT Tyler added three more in the six highlights by Buchhorn driving in two runs on his fifth triple of the season and the final Patriot run was scored in the eighth with Bishop singling to center field to Welch who led off the inning with a double to left field for his fourth hit of the game.

Imig (4-0) shined in Friday’s opener, striking out four and limiting the YellowJackets to three hits in the first complete game of his career. Imig allowed hits in the second, third and fifth innings and had only walk in the game. He joins Cason Adams as the only Patriots to throw a complete game this season.

Imig was supported with nine runs from the offense with seven coming in a sixth inning where UT Tyler had five and took advantage of two LeTourneau errors. Connor Green led the Patriots with a 3-for-3 game with one RBI, while Sam Lane went 2-for-3 as part of an 11-hit attack against two YellowJackets pitchers. Brady McCoy went 1-for-2 with a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning after Lane had a first-inning sacrifice fly to score Graham Welch who had led off with his nationally-leading sixth triple of the season. Welch would score two of the UT Tyler nine runs in the opener.

Bishop finished the series 6-for-10 with two RBI, while Welch was 6-for-14 with two doubles and a triple. A freshman left-handed hitter, Welch now leads the nation with six triples while Buchhorn is right behind with five triples but leads the ASC with 34 RBI after his six this weekend. Bishop leads the team with a .424 average and 39 hits with Buchhorn at .358 (38 hits). Lane finished the series with four hits and is now hitting .330 with 35 hits. The Patriots as a team finished the series with a .320 average with five doubles, a triple and one home run.
