RICHARDSON – The No. 18-ranked UT Tyler baseball team won its American Southwest Conference series over Texas Dallas after splitting a doubleheader with the Comets on Saturday at the UTD Baseball Field where the Patriots had opened with an 11-6 win on Friday in the series opener.

The Patriots (15-7, 6-3 ASC) opened the day with an 8-6 loss to the Comets (8-9, 3-6 ASC) before surviving to take an 11-10 win in the third and final game of the series. UT Tyler improves to 5-4 on the road with the win and have still not lost two games in one day all season.

Alex Bishop led the Patriots in the 11-10 win by going 3-for-4 with his team-leading third home run to go along with scoring four runs. Bishop led off the seventh inning to spark a frame where the Patriots scored five runs on five hits to take a 10-4 lead over the Comets who would make their charge in the eighth and ninth innings. Down seven entering the bottom of the ninth, the Comets were coming off a three-run eighth but were still down four. After a leadoff double, hit by pitch and a single, Smith doubled to make it a one-run game with only one out. Travis Payne, who had entered the game with the bases loaded, would coax a line-out double play to second base though as the Patriots hung on for the win.

Nate Imig (3-0) earned the win for the Patriots after striking out five through six innings in his first start of the season. The right-hander would scatter nine hits in his six innings by giving up only three earned runs and exited with the Patriots owning a 5-4 lead. The seventh was were the Patriots would win the game as Bishop led off with the homer and then Kelly Dorsett added an RBI single before three runs scored on a dropped fly ball to center field. UT Tyler would tack on the eventual winning run in the eighth with Bishop leading off with a double and then scoring when Daniel Williams hit a double to left-center field. The opposite field hit was Williams’ first double of the season and gave the Patriots an 11-4 lead which would slip to the one-run deficit.

Sam Lane, Trenton Buchhorn Williams, Josh Burns and Blake Wilson each had three hits in the game for the Patriots who finished the series with a .362 team batting average against the Comets. Lane and Trenton Buchhorn each had seven hits in the series, while Bishop had two home runs and two doubles in Richardson.

The Patriots started the day with the 8-6 loss despite finishing the game with 12 hits and seeing the Comets commit three errors. UT Tyler would lead 2-1 after a pair of RBI from Blake Wilson and Graham Welch in the second inning, but UTD would put two runs on the board in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take command and even the series with a seven-inning win.

Michael Blevins (2-2) received the loss for the Patriots after giving up four runs on eight hits in four innings of work, while Lee (2-1) secured the win with five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings for the Comets.

Trenton Buchhorn led the Patriots with a 3-for-5 game with one RBI and two runs scored, while Sam Lane had two hits including a run-scoring triple. Lane is the UT Tyler all-time leader with 14 triples in his career and would also have a single in the game. Brady McCoy added a sixth inning RBI single and went 2-for-2 in the game, while Alex Bishop and Daniel Williams also had hits for the Patriots.

UT Tyler will return to action with a 6 p.m. non-conference game against Southwestern on Tuesday at Irwin Field before hosting LeTourneau on Thursday and Friday in a three-game ASC series.
