TYLER – The UT Tyler baseball team has jumped up to No. 17 in the nation after opening the season with a 9-3 record coming into this week where they’ll play at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Centenary and then a two-game, non-conference series at Louisiana College on Friday and Saturday.

The Patriots (9-3, 3-0 ASC) are coming off a three-game sweep of Mary Hardin-Baylor last weekend and will be playing their first road games of the season this week. UT Tyler, which was No. 22 in the preseason rankings, enters the fourth week of the season with a .281 team batting average which includes 26 doubles, nine triples a home run and 74 singles. The pitching staff owns a 3.50 ERA with 92 strikeouts and only 27 walks through 103 innings of work. UT Tyler dropped a 9-2 decision to the Gents in the first meeting of the season at the Clements Fluids Classic. Centenary is 10-3 this season after taking two of three last weekend against Southwestern in Georgetown.

Max Page will make the first start of his career on Wednesday against Centenary. A left-handed freshman, Page earned a win last weekend when he went 2 1/3 innings without allowing a run in the series opener against UMHB and will be making his fourth appearance of the season. He enters the start with a 2.45 ERA and having scattered seven hits over 7 1/3 innings of work.

Trenton Buchhorn was named the ASC Hitter of the Week on Monday and comes into this week leading the Patriots with a .373 batting average, 19 hits and 15 RBI. A junior from Arlington, Buchhorn has four doubles and three triples, while Graham Welch has three doubles, three triples and is second on the team with a 15 hits. Welch is the only Patriot to have started the season by reaching base in all 12 games, while he is tied with Braxton Hollenshead with a .333 average. Hollenshead has 14 hits and 11 RBI as the team’s shortstop, while Alex Bishop has 11 RBI, 12 total hits and leads the Patriots with five doubles.

UT Tyler will host Southwestern in a single non-conference game next Tuesday in its next home game at Irwin Field. Chris Bertrand enters this week with 96 career wins as a head coach.
