TYLER – The No. 20 UT Tyler Patriots (9-3, 3-0) completed the first weekend of conference play on Saturday by taking a doubleheader over the Mary-Hardin Baylor Crusaders (3-7, 0-3) 6-1, 10-1, respectively. The wins gave the Patriots a sweep of the Crusaders after winning 8-6 on Friday.

The Patriots got things rolling early in the first game with two runs in the first when Graham Welch got aboard courtesy of a leadoff walk. Braxton Hollenshead and Sam Lane would then both reach on singles to load up the bases with one out. UT Tyler was then gifted a run when Crusader second baseman Seth Martin made an error on a grounder hit by fellow second baseman Trent Buchhorn. Welch came in to score and everyone else advanced up a bag. On the next at-bat, Dalton Smith delivered a sacrifice fly to center that brought home Hollenshead.

In the 2nd inning, UT Tyler built on its lead with an additional three runs. Josh Burns began the inning by getting hit by a pitch. After a Benjamin Romines sacrifice bunt, Welch singled to right to advance Burns to 3rd. Welch would finish both games going 4-7 with three runs scored and an RBI. Hollenshead, Lane, and Buchhorn then all pick up RBIs with singles into the outfield to make it 5-0 UT Tyler. Buchhorn’s single then brought the end of the day for UMHB starter Seth Hill (1-2). He picked up his second loss of the young season going just 1 2/3 innings giving up six hits and four of the five runs being earned.

The Crusaders had a chance to draw closer in the 5th when the first three batters up all reached on singles to load up the bases with no outs. Riley Davis though would ground into an RBI double play. The groundout would plate Caleb Davis, but that was the only run the Patriots would give up. Tyler Stallings (3-0) stayed unbeaten on the year going 5.0 IP with three strikeouts.

The Patriots added another run in the 6th after Hollenshead led off the inning with a double. He went 3-3 in Game 1 with three runs scored. After he advanced to third on a passed ball, Sam Lane drove him in on a sacrifice fly.

UT Tyler then took the second game of the doubleheader by a misleading score of 10-1. In a nine inning game that just took two hours to complete, the Patriots entered the bottom of the sixth inning trailing 1-0. The Crusaders got their sole run in the 4th when a Max Conway infield single to third brought home Dakota Parsons.

The Patriots then started to find offense with a leadoff double by Alex Bishop. Lane then singled to put Bishop at third. Buchhorn then came to the plate and attempted a sacrifice bunt to squeeze Bishop home, but the throw by third baseman Robbie Gillen went wide into right field. This brought home not only Bishop, but also Lane and put Buchhorn at 2nd to make it 5-1. Buchhorn would finish the game 3-5 with a day-high 4 RBIs. He would advance to third on a flyout and then was brought home by a single by catcher Brady McCoy. A pair of flyouts ended the inning with the score 6-1. Starting pitcher Casey Frazier (0-1) dropped his first game of the season despite a solid outing. He only gave up three runs, one earned, with 6.0 IP and one strikeout.

UT Tyler then struck for another three runs the next inning in the seventh. Hollenshead led off the inning with a walk, then reached third on a Lane single to left. While Buchhorn was batting, Lane attempted to steal 2nd and the throw by catcher Max Conway was sent into the outfield, sending Lane to third and bringing home Hollenshead. Buchhorn would finish his at-bat with a RBI triple into center, driving across Lane. Dalton Smith then had a sacrifice fly that plated Buchhorn to make the Patriot lead 6-1.

The last time around for the Patriots in the 8th would plate another four runs. Romines had a one-out double and was driven across by a Welch triple. After a pitching change for the Crusaders, Bishop had two-out infield single to score Welch. Lane then singled to left center and would take 2nd base on the throw as Bishop raced to 3rd. Buchhorn then drove both in for his last two RBIs with a single to center to make the score 10-1.

Michael Blevins (1-1) for the Patriots notched his first win of the season with a very solid day. He would go 8.0 IP and give up only one run on five hits with a sizzling eight strikeouts. He was backed up well by the offense, which produced 15 hits.
