TYLER – Tyler Stallings threw six scoreless innings and Braxton Hollenshead had two hits and drove in three runs to help lead No. 20-ranked UT Tyler to a 9-0 win over Texas Lutheran on Saturday during the second day of the Clements Fluids Classic at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (4-1) jumped out quick with three runs in the first inning and led by the 9-0 margin after posting a four-spot in the fourth. TLU (2-1) fell for the first time after opening its season on Friday night with a win a LeTourneau and then taking a 3-2 win over No. 8 Birmingham Southern on Saturday before playing the Patriots. UT Tyler will return to action at 3 p.m. Sunday in the final game of the Clements Fluids Classic when it will host No. 7 Trinity.

Hollenshead, who also had three putouts at shortstop, drove in the first two runs of the game with a two-run single up the middle in the first inning and then would drive in another run with a double in the fourth. Hollenshead finished the game 2-for-4, while Trenton Buchhorn, Graham Welch and Michael Caruso also had two-hit games. Buchhorn had two singles and one RBI and is now hitting .435 with a team-leading 10 hits through five games.

Welch, a lefty like Buchhorn, went 2-for-4 and scored two runs and Caruso had two singles in his second start of the season. Alex Bishop would drive in two runs with a two-run triple in the fourth inning to score Sam Lane and Buchhorn in a frame where Welch led off with a double. Bishop’s triple was his first of the season and the fifth for the Patriots through five games.

Stallings (2-0) was commanding on the mound for the Patriots by going six innings with four strikeouts and allowing only two hits. A senior from Splendora, Stallings earned a win for the second straight Saturday and is 5-0 over the past two seasons and currently owns a 1.55 career ERA and has 36 career strikeouts in 46 1/3 innings. Stallings left the game with the 9-0 lead and saw Max Page throw two scoreless innings with two strikeouts and Travis Payne close out the game in the ninth.

 

Texas Lutheran wins over Birmingham Southern

Unranked Texas Lutheran Bulldogs (2-0) upset No. 8 Birmingham Southern Panthers (1-1) 5-3 in the first game of the second day of the Clements Fluids Classic. Aaron Milone picked up the win for the Bulldogs with 1.1 innings pitched without giving up a hit.

Birmingham South went up 1-0 in the third when Matt Brown had an RBI groundout, bringing home Taylor McCraken. Texas Lutheran tied it up in the fifth inning when Riley Schafer was scored off an single by Rayce Gatlin.

In the sixth, the Panthers hit for four singles that brought home two runs to retake the lead 3-1. RBIs were hit for by Preston White and McCraken. Texas Lutheran responded by batting completely through their lineup. Southern gave up three errors in the inning, two by second baseman David Scott and one by relief pitcher Easton Fuller.

The Bulldogs brought home fours runs, all unearned. Austin Frick came to in pinch hit and drove home Riley Schafer. Colby Schrade then hit an RBI single bringing home Schafer. Then Alex Gutierrez drove home Schrade on another single to take the lead 4-3. Gutierrez would then score on Scott’s second error of the inning that kept the inning alive, making the score 5-3.

Birmingham Southern had a chance in the ninth when McCraken reached on a leadoff double. However, the rally quickly ended when Rhodes, Brown, and Wise all were sat down on one- pitch at-bats. Derek Cantu recorded his first save of the season.
