TYLER – UT Tyler freshman Graham Welch had three hits and drove in four runs while Trenton Buchhorn, Alex Bishop and Ben Romines each delivered three RBI to help lead No. 20-ranked UT Tyler to a 21-7 win over the University of Dallas on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (3-0) opened the season by combining to outscored the Crusaders by a 39-11 margin in the three-game set and average 10 hits per game. UT Tyler finished the series with 10 doubles, two triples a home run and 17 singles while the Patriot pitching staff limited UD to a .202 batting average. The Patriots pounded out 15 hits on Sunday in the finale and took advantage of 17 errors by the Crusaders (2-4) on Sunday to run away with the lopsided victory.

Welch finished the game 3-for-5, including a run-scoring triple in the second inning and RBI singles in the third and eighth innings. A lefty from Plano, Welch would also drive in a run with sacrifice fly in the sixth and finished the first weekend of his collegiate career with five hits and six RBI. Buchhorn would have two hits and three RBI, starting with a third-inning RBI single that was part of a five-run frame and then a two-run double to the right-center field gap in a six-run eighth inning for the Patriots. Bishop went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and his three RBI with a double, while Dalton Smith and leadoff hitter Braxton Hollenshead added two hits each.

Romines would collect all three of his RBI with one swing in a seventh-inning pinch hit appearance where he went opposite field with a double down the left-field line to score Kelly Dorsett, Brady McCoy and Bishop. Dorsett, who went 3-for-3 in the second game of the series, was 1-for-3 with three runs scored on Sunday as the team’s designated hitter.

Nate Imig (1-0) would earn the win for the Patriots in relief after entering the game in the third inning with the Patriots leading 5-4. Imig would go 2 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and allow two earned runs in relief of starter Michael Blevins who started the game with two strikeouts in the first and three in the second before running into trouble in the third in his first start of his senior season. Blevins did not receive a decision in the game but now has 99 strikeouts in his career after his 28th appearance for UT Tyler. Imig, a sophomore from Leander, is now 5-0 as a Patriot after going 4-0 last season in nine appearances. The Patriots would also use Reese Read who had two strikeouts in two innings of work and Blake Brunnemann and closer Chad Hayes for one inning each to complete the series. Hayes had one strikeout in the ninth before getting a foul out to end the series.

UT Tyler will host the Clements Classic this weekend where they will open with a 6 p.m. game on Friday against Centenary and then play Texas Lutheran on Saturday and Trinity on Sunday in a matchup of nationally-ranked teams.
