Baseball Defeats LeTourneau, 7-2 in Longview

LONGVIEW-- The No. 22 UT Tyler baseball team defeated American Southwest Conference rival Letourneau, 7-2 on Friday evening, improving its record to 26-8 overall and 9-4 in the ASC.  Pitcher Jack Barkley picked up the win, improving his season record to a perfect 9-0.

The Patriots struck early, scoring three runs in the first three innings of play.  In the top of the first, Aaron McCain reached base with a single, and was knocked in by Will Allen's RBI single, giving the Patriots the 1-0 lead.

In the third, the same duo did the damage, giving the Patriots the 3-0 lead.  McCain led off the third with a solo homerun to left field, and Allen drove in one more run with another RBI single.  

LeTourneau (13-19, 7-9) was able to claw back into the game, starting in the fourth inning on a solo homerun by Matt Leftwich.  The Yellowjackets got to within one run in the seventh, following a sacrifice fly by Nate Tomaszewski, making the score 3-2 Patriots.

UT Tyler put the game away in the eighth and ninth innings, scoring four runs over the last two innings of the game.  In the eigth, Issac Tijerina singled in Hayden Chick, making the score 4-2 UT Tyler.

In the ninth, the Patriots scored three more runs, highlighted by a two-run single by Tijerina, making the score 7-2.

Barkley went six full innings, giving up six hits and allowing just one earned run.  Jacob Yanker worked the last three innings, giving up now runs and just one hit.

Tijerina finished the night going 3 for 4 with three RBI, while McCain finished with three hits and three runs scored. 

The teams continue their series with a double-header beginning at noon Saturday in Longview.
